Senior receiver Zach Bartak had caught 13 passes for 122 yards Thursday night but his St. Anselm College football team opened the season with a 38-16 loss to Wagner in Staten Island, N.Y.
The Greenfield High School graduate also rushed once for 15 yards and accounted for 137 of his team’s 396 total yards.
St. Anselm held a 7-3 lead after the first quarter and the teams were tied at the break but Wagner scored 28 unanswered points in the second half, including 21 in the fourth quarter to pull away.
St. Anselm plays its home opener on Saturday at 4 against Bentley.
Thursday Night champions
Doc Natenshon and Steve Dinkelaker were the Thursday Night League champions at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Brian Luippold and Mark Kennedy finished second and Jim Olzewski and Joe Lachance were third. Rob Haigh and Rob Haigh Sr. were fourth, and Keith Schempp and Gary Stacy were fifth.
Chartier shoots age
Leo Chartier shot his age Friday afternoon at the Country Club of Greenfield.
The 87-year-old shot a 86 during his round, which was played with Bob Barclay and Fran Gougen.
Timmons League
Walt Sanieski and Tim Nichols shot a 36 to win low gross Wednesday during the Timmons League at the Northfield Golf Course.
Joe Lisewski and Eric Bush won low net with a 27. Bush was the medalist with a 37, followed by John Hodgman at 39.
Jeff Kenney was closest to the pin on No. 6 at 2-5. Hodgman was closest on No. 7 at 8-4.
Ashfield Women’s
Diane O’Connell and Cyndie Stetson shot a 44 to win the “Two-Person Rain Scramble” Thursday during the Ashfield Community Golf Club Women’s League.
Bev Williams and Mary Stokarski won fewest putts with 13.
EDGE tournament
The 10th Annual Edge Basketball Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 17 at Northfield Golf Course.
Entry fee for the 9 a.m. shotgun start event is $260 per team and includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, food on the course throughout the day, prizes and a post-tournament meal and prizes.

Holy Family Parish tourney
The Holy Family Parish Council of the Knights of Columbus is hosting its inaugural charity golf tournament on Sept. 25 at Hickory Ridge Golf Club in Amherst.

Montague fall lessons
Montague Parks & Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for its fall tennis program.
The program is available for children ages 7 and up, and is held on Saturday mornings from Sept. 10 through Oct. 15 at the Turners Falls High School courts. Group lessons are 45 minutes in duration.
Fees are $50 for Montague residents and $55 for nonresidents.

The Montague Parks & Recreation Department is taking registrations for its Youth Soccer Programs. Coaches are also needed for all levels.
• Start Smart Squirts — Open to children in grades K through 2 and held Saturday mornings from 10 to 11 from Sept. 10 until Oct. 22. Cost is $30 for Montague residents, and $35 for nonresidents.
• Junior Travel Team — Open to children in grades 3 and 4 and held Saturday mornings as part of the Tri-County Youth Soccer League. Cost is $45 for Montague residents, and $50 for nonresidents. Practices begin in early September.
• Senior Travel Team — Open to children in grades 5 and 6 and held Saturday mornings as part of the Tri-County Youth Soccer League. Cost is $50 for Montague residents, and $55 for nonresidents. Practices begin in early September.
