Let’s leave “senior” in

Dear Greenfield, Remember us?

We attended council and committee meetings, walked to Town Hall, and waved signs on Main Street last year. If your perception of “seniors” changed, good for you. We made a huge effort to educate and advocate for a new senior center to replace the current unacceptable one.

Thanks to Mayor Martin and many town counselors, the go ahead has been granted, and we are on our way. Sadly, some of the Town Council has decided that “senior” is a pejorative term that scares away attendees. They want to leave out the word senior and only indicate “community” center.

This new building will serve the whole community. There are already some programs at the current location that welcome all ages. The schedule is in The Recorder every week.

The library hosts community programs, and it’s still called “library.” The high school also serves the whole community by offering a polling place. We still call it a high school.

I hope you will urge the council to revisit this issue before the welcome sign is placed on the building. “Community/Senior Center” would be perfect. If you are 55 or better, don’t be afraid of the word “senior.” It’s not a description of your fitness, sense of humor or intellect. It’s only dependent on a number that indicates your experience.

Come enjoy the fun, fitness and friendship that is the Greenfield Senior Center.
