Harrington gets nod from nurses

Andrea Harrington, one of three Democratic candidates vying in the Sept. 8 primary for a state Senate seat in the Berkshire-Hampshire-Franklin-Hampden District, has been endorsed by the Massachusetts Nurses Association, which represents 23,000 nurses across the state.

Harrington, who is running for the seat to be vacated by Sen. Benjamin Downing, D-Pittsfield, in a district that includes nine western Franklin County towns, said, “I am committed to fighting for important causes like making health care more accessible for working families and seniors, combating the opioid epidemic devastating our region, and working regionally to grow our economy.”

Progressives back Morneau for Governor’s Council

The Progressive Democrats of Massachusetts has endorsed Governor’s Council candidate Jeff Morneau in the Eighth District.

Peter Enrich, PDM chairman, said the all-volunteer organization considered both Morneau and his opponent in the Sept. 8 Democratic primary, former Judge Mary Hurley, and that “Jeff Morneau’s Progressive record and values made it a clear choice.”

In an endorsement, Enrich said “As a lawyer, Jeff has stood up for the people and defeated large insurance companies and big businesses and continues to fight for workers’ and consumers’ rights. Jeff is also against the death penalty and supports the expansion of drug courts and veteran’s treatment courts. He will ensure that candidates for judicial and parole board positions are aware of the problem of mass incarceration and the need to consider alternatives to incarcerating non-violent drug offenders. He is also committed to making sure that the public has a judiciary that is representative of the larger community.”

There is no Republican candidate for the two-year position on the council, which reviews the governor’s judicial appointments for approval.
