John Ollari of Millers Falls was chosen as one of three captains for the Westfield State University football team.

Ollari, a junior, joins Evan Cain and Devin Lekan as the team leaders.

A linebacker, Ollari led the Owls with 107 tackles (73 solo). He added 9½ tackles for losses, 2½ sacks and three interceptions with 123 return yards.

Ollari also serves as the Owls’ punter, averaging 40.9 yards per kick. He pinned opponents inside their 20-yard line 11 times and had seven punts of 50 or more yards. He was named a first team all-conference and a second-team All-East Region selection as a punter .

“Some of the things our captains talked about were about overcoming adversity and their demonstration of commitment to our program in the offseason,” said Owls head coach Pete Kowalski. “Those factors were validated in their teammates’ support for our captains. They may be young in age, but they are seasoned in their life experiences and have a deep devotion for Westfield State University and Owls football.”

Road race

Northfield Summer Series

Isaiah Morrison geared up for the upcoming high school cross-country season by winning the final Northfield Summer Road Race on Thursday night.

The incoming Greenfield High School senior completed the 3.3-mile race in 20 minutes, 20 seconds, leading the crowd of 33 runners.

Clayton Garland, who runs for Pioneer Valley Regional School, came in second at 21:23, while Joe Sumner was third at 22:02. Tyson LaBombard, another GHS runner, came in fourth at 22:31, and Derek Postema was fifth at 22:36.

Marcy Cabanas won the female race in 23:02 and was sixth overall, while Amelia Simmons was the second female (10th overall) in 25:16. Cabanas was the female winner in 12 of 13 races this summer.

Maynard 5-miler

The 22nd annual Don Maynard Memorial 5-Mile Road Race and 3-mile walk will held Sept. 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Greenfield Municipal Swimming Area.

Montague fall lessons

Montague Parks & Recreation Department is now accepting registrations for its fall tennis program.

The program is available for children ages 7 and up, and is held on Saturday mornings from Sept. 10 through Oct. 15 at the Turners Falls High School courts. Group lessons are 45 minutes in duration.

Fees are $50 for Montague residents and $55 for nonresidents.

Bob Boivin and Steve Brown both recorded a plus-6 to share top weekly point quota honors in the Knights of Columbus Golf League on Wednesday at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.

Rod Brunelle and Bruce MacConnell tied for thrid at plus-5.

Brian Peters was closest to the pin on No. 7 (3 feet, 9 inches), and Matt Kujala was closest on No. 9 (17-0).

Dorothy Adams was the runner-up at plus-4.

Adams and Marilyn Kostanski tied for low gross at 43.

Jane Smith and Leslie Heath were tied for fewest putts with 15 each.

EDGE tournament

The 10th annual Edge Basketball Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 17 at Northfield Golf Course.

Entry fee for the 9 a.m. shotgun start event is $260 per team and includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, food on the course throughout the day, prizes and a post-tournament meal and prizes.

Valley Storm tryouts

The Valley Storm Softball organization will hold tryouts for its various fast-pitch teams this month.

The Storm has a 12U, 14U and 16U team and the following is information on tryouts for each:

Greenfield Rec

The Greenfield Recreation Department is offering youth soccer programs for Grades K-6 this fall.

• Peewee Soccer — For boys and girls in grades K through 2. The program is a small field, 3 vs. 3 program, which introduces passing, dribbling and shooting skills with weekly instruction and scrimmages. The program runs Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. from Sept. 10 through Oct. 29 at the Green River Swimming & Recreation Area. and costs $30 for residents and $35 for nonresidents.

• Travel Junior League — For grades 3 and 4 with practices once during the week and games on Saturday mornings. Teams travel to surrounding towns as part of the Tri-County League for games. Cost is $45 for residents and $50 for non-residents.

• Travel Senior League — For grades 5 and 6 with practices once during the week and games on Saturday mornings. Teams travel to surrounding towns as part of the Tri-County League for games. Cost is $45 for residents and $50 for nonresidents.

Deadline to register for all leagues is Sept. 2 and a $5 late fee will be assessed for late registrations.

PV pole vault school

The Pioneer Valley Pole Vault School in Bernardston is open by appointment for individual and group lessons through the fall with negotiable rates.

Lessons will be taught by Pioneer Valley Regional School track and Northfield Mount Hermon pole-vault coach Jim Bell, himself a Masters pole vaulter.
