GREENFIELD — Two people were arrested on heroin-related charges Sunday after the vehicle they were traveling in was stopped on Interstate 91 by state police for an expired inspection sticker.

Jesse Aaron Stebbins, 26, of Turners Falls, and Jennifer Chan, 31, whose address was unavailable, were charged with possession with intent to distribute a Class A drug, being present where heroin is kept and conspiracy to violate drug law. Chan was also charged with operating with a suspended license and no inspection sticker.

According to a report by state trooper Timothy Stone, Chan’s Jeep was stopped on I-91 north in Greenfield around 1:30 p.m. after a random compliance check revealed her vehicle was overdue for a state inspection. Stone wrote the two occupants — identified as Chan and Stebbins — told him they were coming back from Northampton, where Chan had dropped her son off with his father, but neither could remember where they had dropped him off or what exit they had taken. Stone also noted Chan’s license was suspended.

Prior to taking an inventory of the vehicle, Chan told Stone that she had empty dope bags, syringes and a spoon in her purse, and that Stebbins had hidden more heroin in the vehicle, according to the report. Police located a first aid box under the passenger seat containing seven half bricks — paper boxes that contain 50 wax paper bags of heroin each.

Stone wrote in his report that a total of 350 bags were located in the vehicle.

Stebbins’ bail was set at $5,000. He could not post bail and was transported to the Franklin County Jail, where he was held until his arraignment in Greenfield District Court Monday. Bail was set at $5,000 cash or $50,000 surety during his arraignment, and Stebbins is due back in court Sept. 15 for a pretrial conference.

Chan’s bail was set at $200 following her arrest, which she posted. She has not yet been arraigned.
