Northfield Mount Hermon School alumna Tessa Gobbo helped the United States women’s eight crew to its third consecutive gold medal after finishing the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 1.49 seconds.

Gobbo, from Chesterfield, N.H., graduated from NMH in 2009. The 25-year-old began rowing in 2006.

She is part of a United States women’s eight team that has not lost a major international championship since 2005, a streak that includes eight world championships and three Olympic titles. The U.S. has won four gold medals in the women’s eight since the event debuted at the Olympics in 1976.

The U.S. did not lead the race from start to finish and was actually third overall at the race midpoint, behind Canada and the Netherlands. But the U.S. began to gain steam from that point on and by the 1,500-meter mark, the team had pulled ahead of Canada by 1.72 seconds as the Canadians began to fade. The U.S. led the rest of the way and won by 2.49 seconds over Great Britain. Romania took third 2.61-seconds back of the United States.
