Doug Letourneau went 3-for-5 with a grand slam and Smitty’s Pub defeated Montague Elks Lodge, 21-12, in the first round of the Greenfield Co-Rec Adult Softball League game Wednesday night at Unity Park in Turners Falls.

Matt Gilbert finished 4-for-5 with a three-run bomb for the A Division third seeds, and Cassy Jouannet finished 3-for-4.

Christian Pagan went 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs in the loss, and Brian Borges-Vega went 3-for-4 with a home r.

Smitty’s advances in the winners’-bracket of the double-elimination tournament and will play Saturday, while the Elks move to the losers’ bracket and will play Friday.

• In other action, Evan Rice drove in Katie Newell for the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as Hubie’s Tavern scored eight times in the frame to overtake the Spirit Shoppe, 17-16, Wednesday at Unity Park.

Todd Wiles (4-for-4) led the offense for Hubie’s with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs, and Brian Ginnity went 4-for-4 with a home run, triple, two doubles and three RBIs. Rice had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs, and Stefanie Williams and Kelly Smith each had one hit and two RBIs.

Jay Avery had three doubles and one RBI in the loss, and Crystal Wilkinson had a hit.

Golf

Greenfield Elks League

Dick Golosh and Sharon Rawson remained the leaders of the Greenfield Elks League after play on Wednesday at the Country Club of Greenfield.

The duo lead the league for the third week with 36 points. Ed Reagey and Jim Jason are tied with Bill Luippold and Tom McDonald for second place with 34 points, and Ed Underwood and George Hall are fourth with 33 points.

Hall was closest to the pin on No. 5 at 6 feet, 3 inches.

CFC Ladies

Marty Stinson shot a 48 to win low gross in the A Division during the Wednesday Ladies League at Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston.

Liz Dolby won low net with a 41.

Jill Waldron won low gross in the B Division with a 45, and Deb Putnam was second with a 49. Jodi Hoynoski won low net with a 31, and Therese Romano was second with a 42.

Laura Gross was closest to the pin on No. 3 at 15 feet, 2 inches. Stinson was closest on No. 9 at 22-7.

Timmons League

Duff Delano and Pat Varner shot a 36 to win low gross during the Timmons League Wednesday night at Northfield Golf Course.

Dan Campbell and Brad Stafford won low net with a 27.

Brian Cocco was closest to the pin on No. 6 at 2-9, and Stafford was closest on No. 7 at 17-4. Delano was the match medalist with a 38, followed by Fred Avery with a 39.

Edge Hill Ladies

Ellen Bitzer shot 40 to win the A Division of the Edge Hill Golf Course Ladies League Wednesday night in Ashfield.

Karen Hopkins won the B Division with a 51.

Bitzer was closest to the pin after three strokes on the par-5 18th hole at 1 foot, 10 inches.

KOC League

Chris Brown won the weekly point quota at plus-6 during the Knights of Columbus Golf League at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls on Wednesday.

Steve Brown and Alan Savinski were tied for second at plus-4. Savinski was closest to the pin on No. 7 at 14-1.

Thomas Ladies

Dorothy Adams won low gross with a 46 during the Thomas Memorial Ladies League Wednesday in Turners Falls.

Deb Collins won the weekly point quota at plus-4, while Mary Ellen Fydenkevez, Barb Laczynski and Karren Sacco all tied for second at plus-3. Fydenkevez was closest to the pin on No. 7 at 9-10, and Laczynski won the substitute par for worst par 3 and par 4 hole with a 42.

High School

Turners Falls football meeting

The Turners Falls High School football team will hold a parents meeting on Aug. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Equipment will be issued immediately following the meeting.

The first two days of practice will be on Aug. 19 and Aug. 20 and will start both days at 3:30.

Athletes, Opioids and Addiction

The Northwestern District Attorney’s office will screen the informative video, “Athletes, Opioids and Addiction” on Wednesday at 6:30 in the auditorium at Frontier Regional School in South Deerfield.

The event is free and will also feature pizza and drinks. The video features local physician Dr. Ruth Potee and is a 17-minute film that will help student-athletes, parents and coaches understand the issues of concern when opioids or prescribed for sports injuries and dental surgery.

Physicians will also be on hand to present the state-mandated concussion training in conjuction with the video, as well as to answer questions.

Soccer

Greenfield Rec

The Greenfield Recreation Department is offering youth soccer programs for Grades K-6 this fall.

• Peewee Soccer — For boys and girls in grades K-2. The program is a small field, 3 vs. 3 program, which introduces passing, dribbling and shooting skills with weekly instruction and scrimmages. The program runs Saturdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. from Sept. 10 through Oct. 29 at the Green River Swimming & Recreation Area. and costs $30 for residents and $35 for nonresidents.

• Travel Junior League — For grades 3 and 4 with practices once during the week and games on Saturday mornings. Teams travel to surrounding towns as part of the Tri-County League for games. Cost is $45 for residents and $50 for non-residents.

• Travel Senior League — For grades 5 and 6 with practices once during the week and games on Saturday mornings. Teams travel to surrounding towns as part of the Tri-County League for games. Cost is $45 for residents and $50 for nonresidents.

Deadline to register for all leagues is Sept. 2 and a $5 late fee will be assessed for late registrations.

The Montague Parks & Recreation Department is taking registrations for its Youth Soccer Programs. Coaches are also needed for all levels.

• Start Smart Squirts — Open to children in grades K through 2 and held Saturday mornings from 10 to 11 from Sept. 10 until Oct. 22. Cost is $30 for Montague residents, and $35 for nonresidents.

• Junior Travel Team — Open to children in grades 3 and 4 and held Saturday mornings as part of the Tri-County Youth Soccer League. Cost is $45 for Montague residents, and $50 for non-residents. Practices begin in early September.

• Senior Travel Team — Open to children in grades 5 and 6 and held Saturday mornings as part of the Tri-County Youth Soccer League. Cost is $50 for Montague residents, and $55 for non-residents. Practices begin in early September.

Northfield Rec offerings

The Northfield Recreation Commission will be holding registrations for its fall sports offerings Wednesday night from 5:30-6:30 in the cafeteria at Northfield Elementary School.

• Soccer — One program for grades pre-K through 2 ($15 for residents, $25 for non-residents), and another for kids in grades 3 and up ($25 for residents, $35 for non-residents). T-shirt is included.

• Field hockey — Open to kids in grades 3-6 and taught by current Greenfield High School varsity coach Erin Thayer. Cost is $35 ($45 for non-residents) and includes stick, goggles, ball and shin guard, or take $10 off if you own equipment.

• Flag football — Open to kids in grades 3-6 and costs $15 ($25 for non-residents), and includes a T-shirt.

• Karate — Open to anyone grades 2 and older (adults are welcome). Program is free but students must purchase a uniform.

Registration closes for all programs on Aug. 26.

Valley Storm tryouts

The Valley Storm Softball organization will hold tryouts for its various fast-pitch teams this month.

The Storm has a 12U, 14U and 16U team and the following is information on tryouts for each:

Newt Fall Ball registrations

The Newt Guilbault Community League will hold registrations for fall baseball this week at the Campbell Field concession stand at Sheffield School in Turners Falls.

The league is open to Franklin County players ages 7 through 12. Games begin the first weekend of September. Registrations will take place today from 5 to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m.
