Ms. Geist: I read your article with interest. I, too, am a pet owner and animal lover. I have always had cats, because they are more independent than dogs. A dog is almost as much responsibility as a child. They require a lot of attention. That is exactly why I do not have a dog.
Though I would like to, I know I can’t give one the attention he needs. Even with my cat, if I am going to be away more than 10 or 12 hours, I have a friend come in and check on her.
My brother once had a pedigreed boxer, a beautiful animal that he loved dearly. He was in the habit of leaving him at home in the trailer when he went to work. He never had a problem until one day it just got too hot. He had left a lot of water, but he came home that day to find the dog dead.
Needless to say, he was devastated and has never forgiven himself.
You say you will park in the shade, but not all parking lots have shaded spots. Those spots that do get sucked up as fast as a summer rain in the desert.
Breaking a window may not be the best way to handle this problem, but a concerned bystander needs a way to help if they think it is warranted. I think calling 911 is a good compromise. Officers and animal welfare workers can be trained to assess the situation and follow through if they think it’s necessary.
As to feeling you must either take your dog with you or leave him at home, might I suggest getting a pet sitter or using doggie day care? Doesn’t your best friend deserve this at least?
