Last weekend, I took my stepdaughter and granddaughter to Tri-Town beach in Whately. It was an early hot afternoon, and we noticed there were not very many people swimming.

We were about to find out why. We parked and gathered our towels and beach toys but before we could set up a blanket, a young female lifeguard asked if we had a pass. We did not. I explained that I live in South Deerfield and inquired how much it would cost.

She replied a shocking $30 for the day and $35 for a season’s pass.

Unbelievable. You might have thought we were going to swim in liquid gold. Fortunately, my granddaughter did not understand why we couldn’t stay, so we chose to go elsewhere. The Greenfield Swimming and Recreation Area was $10 but Puffer’s Pond (in Amherst) was free.
