Cassidhe Wozniak went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs on Thursday as Turners Falls closed out the Suburban League softball 14-and-under regular season with a 17-5 win over West Springfield at Bourdeau Fields Complex in Turners Falls.
The game was called in the sixth inning due to the mercy rule.
Jade Tyler went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the win and also pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts. Eliza Johnson went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs, and Taylor Murphy finished 3-for-4. Olivia Whittier went 2-for-3 with one run batted in, Hailey Bogusz singled and plated three runs, and Lydia Wright went 1-for-1.
Turners Falls finished 11-1 during the regular season and earned the top seed in the postseason. Turners Falls earned a bye through the first day of the tournament and will host a game on Tuesday night at 7.
Greenfield 12s earn 4 seed
Gianna Conte struck out 13 over six innings and Greenfield defeated Southwick, 5-2, in a SL 12-and-under softball game Thursday night in Southwick.
Southwick threatened to come back in the sixth on Conte, loading the bases, but a strong play in the outfield by Julia Kovalsick got a huge out and stopped the comeback. Kovalsick was credited for her strong defensive play.
Kelsey Richardson also had a strong defensive game behind the plate for Greenfield, throwing out a pair of base runners attempting to steal. Richardson also had a hit.
Rachel Dodge, Kara O’Connor and Hannah Marchefka each had two hits in the win.
Greenfield finished 8-4 during the regular season to earn the fourth seed and will host fifth-seeded Agawam A in the first game of the tournament Monday night at 7 at Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield.
Valley Storm tryouts
The Valley Storm Softball organization will hold tryouts for its various fast-pitch teams during the month of August.
The Storm has a 12U, 14U and 16U team and the following is information on tryouts for each:

Pioneer Women’s League
Kristin Ouellette went 2-for-4 with a solo home run to lead Conway to a 10-4 win over the Buckland Brew Crew in the Pioneer Women’s Softball League Thursday in Conway.
Emily Wholey went 3-for-4 in the win, Nelly Wilkins finished 3-for-4 with a triple, and Chelsea Betsold went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.
Carrie Shea finished 4-for-4 with a triple and a double for the Brew Crew, and Jen Minckler hit a two-run triple.
• In other action, Steph Smith had three hits and two RBIs to lead Ashfield to a 7-5 win over the Colrain Misfits in Colrain.
Amanda Clarke added two hits and two RBIs in the win.
Belle Cossey tripled and singled for Colrain, Ashley Pease hit two doubles as part of a three-hit performance, and Jenny Dawson doubled and singled.
Montague Co-Rec
Jake Coburn went 4-for-4 with a home run and Kustom Auto Body beat Hubie’s Tavern, 15-8, in a Montague Co-Rec Softball League game at Unity Park in Turners Falls.
Amber Coburn went 4-for-4 in the win, and Matt Luippold went 3-for-4 with a home run.
Ricky Roberts went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the loss. Don Mailloux finished 3-for-3, and Jenny Roberts had a pair of hits.
Bezio wins in Northfield
Bob Bezio led 41 other runners across the finish line during the Northfield Summer Series Road Race on Thursday.
Bezio finished the 3.3-mile course in 20 minutes, 57 seconds to beat Joe Sumner, who was second in 21:53. Tyssen Labombard came in third in 23:12, Derek Postma was fourth in 23:32, and Marcy Cabanas was fifth in 23:42.
Cabanas led the women’s field, while Amy O’Sullivan was second in 27:38, and Kristi Nicholson was third in 28:07.
Next week is the annual Library Race, a favorite for runners, who run through Northfield’s Dickinson Library as part of the race.
Elms track benefit
A 3.5-mile road race will be held Saturday in Northfield to benefit the new track and field team at Elms College in Chicopee.
The race will start at Northfield Town Hall at 10 a.m., with registration beginning at 9:15 a.m.
Registration fee is $7 per person, and children under 12 years old can run for free.
The low-key race is open to participants of all ability levels who may choose to run or walk the course. Prizes will awarded to the top three male and female finishers.
Funds raised will help raise money to buy uniforms, equipment and other necessities for the new track and field team, which will compete in its inaugural season in the spring of 2017.
In case of severe weather (such as a thunderstorm), the race will be moved to July 31.

Montague Mug Race
The 36th annual Montague Mug Race will be held on Aug. 20 in Montague Center.
The 5.5-mile race begins at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common. Pewter Mugs are awarded to top male and female finishers, and coffee mugs are given to the top finishers of each division. T-shirts will be available for the first 90 runners.
Now in its 12th year, the 2-mile Mini Mug Race will kick off at 8:35 a.m.
Both races will finish at the ball field. All runners are entered into drawing for local prizes.

DRIVE Men’s championship
Chris Brown scored 24 points on Wednesday night and VT Nameless edged DRIVE Hoops, 69-68, in the DRIVE Hoops Men’s League Basketball championship game at Pioneer Valley Regional School in Northfield.
Ethan Slavin added 10 points in the win.
Angelo Thomas led DRIVE Hoops with 17 points, while Brian Clark chipped in 15.
Ashfield Women’s
Barb Ladd and Diane O’Connell shot a 34 to win the two person scramble during the Ashfield Community Golf Club Women’s League on Thursday.
Bev LaBelle and Connie Szelewicki tied for fewest putts with 10.
K of C League
Matt Kujala and Alan Wondoloski won the weekly point quota at plus-6 during the Knights of Columbus Golf League at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club Wednesday in Turners Falls.
Darren Lenois was third at plus-5.
Steve Ciechomski was closest to the pin on No. 7 at 4 feet, 5 inches, and Steve Brown was closest on No. 9 at 2-9.
Thomas Ladies
Mary Ellen Fydenkevez was a plus-11 to win the weekly point quota during the Thomas Memorial Ladies League on Wednesday.
Barb Howey and Deb Puchalski tied for second at plus-6.
Leslie Heath won low gross with a 43. Barb Laczynski was closest to the pin on No. 7 at 10 feet, and Chante Jillson was closest on No. 9 at 8-3.
EDGE tournament
The 10th Annual Edge Basketball Golf Tournament will be held Sept. 17 at Northfield Golf Course.

Tri-County Open
The Franklin County Bar Association’s fifth-annual Tri-County Open Co-Ed Tennis Tournament will take place on Aug. 6 at 9 a.m. at the Deerfield Academy Tennis Complex.

Wood Racket Tournament
Registrations are now being accepted for a Wood Racket Tennis Tournament Aug. 8 through 11 at the Beacon Field Clay Courts in Greenfield.
The tournament is best of three sets and there will be a consolation bracket for players who lose in the first round. The tournament is open to anyone. Cost is $10 and a can of unopened tennis balls. Draw will take place at 5:30 on the first day of the tournament and matches will take place at 5:30 every day.
