HATFIELD — A 53-year-old Shelburne man was killed in a single-car crash on Interstate 91 near exit 21 on Friday afternoon.
The accident was reported at 4 p.m. State police and First Assistant Northwestern District Attorney Steven E. Gagne were on the scene.
According a press release from the Massachusetts State Police, Trooper Timothy Harris stated the initial investigation indicated a flat tire caused the vehicle, a 2000 Toyota Tacoma, to swerve and then roll over. The operator did not have his seat belt on and was ejected from the vehicle.
The man suffered life-threatening injuries when he was thrown from the vehicle, the release stated. He was transported by Northampton EMS to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, where he was later pronounced dead.
The north and south lanes on Interstate 91 were closed temporarily at the scene during the response and crash investigation.
The name of the man killed at the scene is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
No charges are expected to be filed, according to the release. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit.
