GREENFIELD — Ground has been broken at Greenfield Middle School as the school department’s central office prepares to move into the building’s lower level at the end of the summer.
The roughly $750,000 project will renovate unoccupied space on the middle school’s first floor. Town Council greenlighted funding the project in March.
The new offices will be about the same size as the current Davis Street offices, in terms of square footage. That property is expected to be the site of a new senior center.
The entrance will be separate from the main school for security reasons.
The move won’t have any impact on future plans to move the Math and Science Academy from the Green River School into the building too.
School Committee Chairman Timothy Farrell said the renovation committee and the town are still working to finalize plans for addressing parking needs, which will likely involve adding more lot space.
“There’s still some back and forth between the school department, we know how many spots we need and we need to work out those details with the (Department of Public Works) and the mayor without impacting athletic fields,” Farrell said.
Currently, he said the committee is looking into the ability of being able to park along the school’s exit road that goes to North Street, as well as other spots.
Farrell said the project is still on track to be completed by the beginning of the school year.
