BUCKLAND — The Conservation Commission will hold a public hearing on July 11 at 6:15 p.m. to determine whether the siting of a three-story building to house an elevator for the Salmon Falls Marketplace is subject to provisions of the Wetlands Protection Act.
Building owner and glass artist Josh Simpson would like to construct a three-story, trapezoidal structure, with a basement, to house a lift that would make Salmon Falls accessible on all floors.
Any building less than 200 feet from a river requires a determination from the Conservation Commission, Simpson said, and Salmon Falls Marketplace is 181 feet from the Deerfield River. He said the lift structure is to be built along the Ashfield Street-side of the building.
“About 18 months ago, a special town meeting voted unanimously to give me land beside my building to use to construct the lift upon,” he said. “The lift was legally necessary to proceed with the new restaurant (Blue Rock Cafe) and will provide access to the third floor.”
