Yoga on the ballfield through the month of June

CONWAY — Through the month of June, there will be a gentle yoga class open to elders over 55, held every Wednesday on the ballfield.

The practice begins precisely at 10:15 a.m. No experience is necessary, but, according to a news flier from the United Congregational Church of Conway, it’s recommended that you bring your own mat if you have one.

The cost is $5 per person, and is made possible by the Conway Council on Aging and the Conway Parks, Recreation and Trails Committee.

Any questions can be directed to Ruth Parnall at 413-489-3097.

Unserviceable flags disposed of by local VFW

SUNDERLAND — Unserviceable American flags were collected by the VFW this weekend.

On Saturday, residents had the chance to bring tattered, ripped, worn or faded flags to either the Sunderland Corner Store, the Deerfield Town Common, or the Whately Transfer Station.

Flags were collected from 8 a.m. until noon.

According to the VFW’s website, to dispose of flags properly, the flags must be folded tightly in their customery manner and placed onto a fire burning intensly enough to completely consume the fabric.

Then, whoever is burning the flags, should come to attention, salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and hold a brief moment of silence.

After the fire is completely out, the ashes should be buried.

Local brewers participate in Western Mass Beer Week

SOUTH DEERFIELD — Last week was Western Mass Beer Week, and a few breweries from Franklin County joined the festivities.

Berkshire Brewing Company held a taproom tasting Friday afternoon, which included a special beer brewed for the beer week. The week of brews lasted from June 11 through June 19.

Stoneman Brewing, Element Brewing, Lefty’s and The People’s Pint are also among the region’s brewers who have participated in the event.

They and the rest of Franklin County’s local brewers, hard cider makers and makers of other fermented beverages will be featured at The Recorder’s first locavore fermenters festival, Franklin County On Tap, on July 16 at Berkshree East in Charlemont.

Word has it that the county’s eighth brewer, setting up shop in Whately, may attend as well.
