On March 5, a Saturday, I saw two different motorists make U-turns on Main Street in Greenfield, before 11 a.m. Next week, while parked in front of the post office on Main Street, a woman driving east made a U-turn and, parked across the street right in front of me. Startled, I should not have, but I did honk my horn. She was unmoved. Later, I wondered if she realized that she had done something wrong? You can call the police, and they will tell you it is a $100 fine for making a U-Turn on Main Street. It is dangerous.

There are opportunities to reverse your direction that are safe and legal. At the east end of Main Street, a driver could go through the driveway, around the post office and come out on Franklin Street. Then one could turn any way they wish.

On the west end of Main, one could turn into the mall opposite Conway Street and turn any way one wanted.

Some may say they have made a J-turn, not a U-turn. I think they are both illegal. My mother used to say: “God gave us a head. it’s not a hat-rack. We are intended to use it.” God bless those who do.
