WHATELY — The owner and workers of Bay State Perennial Farm on State Road reported seeing an adult bear and three cubs on the property Friday morning.
Sales associate Beverly Goudreau said she was exiting the barn at around 9 a.m. when she saw a black bear that her boss, Peter Flynn, had seen earlier in the morning. She said she initially thought the sound she heard was coming from a chipmunk inside a greenhouse in the property’s back corner.
“The chipmunk was making a racket. That’s first thing I thought — ‘Why are you making so much noise?’ Then, I turn around and there’s the bear over by the greenhouse,” she said.
Goudreau said Flynn called the environmental police and the local police. She said the adult bear and the cubs eventually went back into the woods.
Goudreau said the adult bear was collared, meaning some agency or department is likely tracking its whereabouts.
