GREENFIELD — People’s United Bank has announced it will close its branch on the Mohawk Trail at the end of the business day June 10.
Patrick Sullivan, the bank’s Massachusetts president, said the decision was made to close the smaller of the two People’s United locations in Greenfield because the vast majority of customers use the Federal Street branch. No employees will be laid off, he said, and the downtown branch’s hours will be expanded.
“We really looked at our customers’ habits, and 95 percent of our customers went to the branch we’re keeping,” he said. “They really weren’t going to the branch next to the supermarket as much.”
Sullivan said he was unsure of how many employees work at the Mohawk Trail location, but that most are part-timers and will be transferred to other branches. People’s United has about 50 locations throughout Massachusetts, and Sullivan said branch usage is being looked at across the state.
Beginning June 10, the Federal Street branch will be open from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and until 6 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays.
Sullivan said customers will not see an interruption of service and accounts will remain the same.
“I’m not going to deny the fact some people many say, ‘I wish I had that for convenience,’ but you have to kind of make a business decision,” he said. “While we’re closing a branch, it’s business as usual and we’re going to continue to support the community as we always have.”
