Lupus support group to host ‘The Purple Butterfly Project’

SOUTH DEERFIELD — In honor of Lupus Awareness Month, the Pioneer Valley Lupus Support Group will host its first “The Purple Butterfly Project” at Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory, 281 Greenfield Road, from May 14 to 20.

Medical organizations use the butterfly as a symbol of hope for sufferers of Lupus, an autoimmune disease that causes a person’s immune system to attack the body’s own healthy tissues and organs.

The exhibit at Magic Wings will feature purple paper butterfliers stitiched together by support group participants. There will also be educational materials on lupus, information on support groups, and an album called “Stories of Hope,” featuring stories by patients of all ages, courtesy of Molly’s Fund Fighting Lupus.
