Mohawk Trail Regional High School scored three times in the top of the eighth inning to knock off Drury High School, 9-6, in an independent softball game Saturday in North Adams.
Drury scored once in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game but the Warriors came right back in the eighth with three runs as Walker, Johnston and Alicia Johnston each scored. Lydia Donahue finished off her complete-game performance by blanking the Blue Devils in the bottom of the eight. Donahue finished with four strikeouts and allowed just seven hits and two walks. She was hurt by three Mohawk errors.
The Warriors’ offense was out in force, piling up 21 hits on the day. Ashley Walker and Caitlin Johnston each had five hits and one RBI for Mohawk (2-2), while Donahue had two hits and two RBIs. Briana Benz had one hit and two RBIs, and Ashley Reynolds had two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Olivia Dubrule and Mikayla Bompastore each added two hits and a run scored.
Maya Howland suffered the loss, striking out eight in 7 innings. She also led the Drury offense with two hits, while Cassandra Crosier had one hit and two RBIs.
UMass women’s lax rolls
Eight players scored Sunday afternoon to lead 19th-ranked UMass to a 18-3 win over Virginia Commonwealth University in an Atlantic 10 women’s lacrosse match in Richmond, Va.
UMass (15-1, 8-0) secured the top seed in the A-10 Championships. The Minutewomen wrap up the regular season Saturday at Garber Field in Amherst at 11 a.m. against Davidson.
Calllie Santos and Eileen McDonald each scored four goals and had one assist in the win, while Holly Turner led the team in points with two goals and four helpers. Sam Walters and Aileen Kelly each stopped two shots in one half of work apiece to combine on the win in goal.
UMass softball sweeps GW
Tara Klee went 2-for-3 and belted a two-run homer to help UMass to a 4-2 win over George Washington in Atltantic 10 softball action Sunday in Washington, D.C.
The win helped UMass (19-21 overall, 11-5 A-10) finish off the three-game weekend series sweep over the Colonials. Taylor Carbone added a two-run single in the third inning, which came just before Klee’s bomb. Meg Colleran struck out five in the complete-game victory.
• On Saturday, Colleran struck out eight to lead UMass to a 2-0 win in the first game of the series.
Ashton Wince and Carbone each drove in runs in the win.
• Also Saturday, Jena Cozza homered twice to lead UMass to a 9-1 win over GW in the second game of the doubleheader.
Olivia Goden hit her first career home run in the win, and Klee connected for her first home run of the weekend.
Carbone earned the win with two strikeouts.
UMass baseball wins 2-of-3
Brandon Walsh struck out 12 and went the distance Sunday to lead UMass to a 8-2 win over La Salle at Lorden Field in Amherst.
UMass took 2-of-3 games from La Salle over the weekend to improve to 11-18 on the season.
Mike Geannelis went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in the win.
• On Saturday, UMass scored eight times en route to a 8-3 win over La Salle in the opener of the weekend series.
The opening game of the three-game weekend set began on Friday but was suspended due to inclement weather with the Minutemen trailing 3-0. UMass scored eight unanswered runs when the game resumed Saturday to earn the victory.
Justin Lasko pitched five innings of relief to earn the win, striking out three.
• Later Saturday, La Salle earned its lone win of the weekend with a 5-3 victory.
Shaw propels Hoggers
Brian Shaw of Conway belted a two-run home run with two outs in the seventh inning to lead Northfield Mount Hermon School to a 5-4 baseball win over Avon Old Farms in a prep baseball game Saturday in Avon, Conn.
Nick Seretta of Greenfield earned the victory, striking out eight in the complete-game effort. The two locals helped the Hoggers to their first win over perennial New England powerhouse Avon Old Farms in at least 30 years.
NMH fell into a 3-0 hole but the Hoggers tied the game with three runs in the fourth, including one on a solo home run by Brett Miner of Greenfield. Avon took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but NMH came back to take a lead in the seventh. Avon got the first two outs of the inning, which brought Seretta to the plate. He worked a walk on a two-out full-count, and Shaw followed with his game-winning home run. In the bottom of the seventh, Seretta worked out of a small jam, getting help from rightfielder Julian Kinney, who made a nice catch to seal the win.
Chris Lasch and Ryan Dale each had one hit and one RBI in the win, and Gianni Demerski added a hit.
NMH boys’ tennis wins
NMH won four of six singles’ matches to edge Williston-Northampton School, 4-3, in a boys’ prep tennis match Saturday in Gill.
Kevin Kee won 7-5, 6-4 at first singles for the Hoggers, and Alvaro Calleja Palacios won 6-3, 6-1 at second singles. Daniel Clarks picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory at fourth singles, and Connor Charlton-Edwards won 6-4, 6-2 at fifth singles.
NMH golf edges Williston
Ricardo Blohm Mendes was the match co-medalist with a 37 and NMH edged Williston-Northampton School, 204-206 in a prep golf match Saturday at the Ledges Golf Club in South Hadley.
WMass Junior Classic
Nate Patterson shot a 151 and won via a match of cards over Luke Spahn to win the ages 16 to 18 division of the WMass Junior Classic Saturday at the Country Club of Greenfield. Patterson shot a 79 in the first round and a 72 in the second. Spahn shot a 74 in the first round, and a 77 in the second.
In the ages 13-15 division, Michael Sosik shot a second-round score of 78 to roar back and finish with a 168 to beat Sean Tully on a match of cards. Sosik shot a first-round score of 90, but improved by 12 strokes in the second round to win the division. Tully shot a 86 in the first round, and a 82 in the second round.
ABCD Kickoff
Ike Purington, David Kennedy, Kevin Harker and Bill Luippold shot a 129 and finished 11-under to win the 2016 ABCD Spring Kickoff Classic at the Country Club of Greenfield on Sunday.
Four teams — Bob Barclay, Jason Kelton, Sally Bernard and Joe Wisneski; Chuck O’Connell, Jason Yuryan, Tom Blancard and Mitchell Parker; David McDonald, Brian Luippold, Steve Forrest and Patrick Varner; Steve Gibowicz, Jeff Jackman, Robert Ferris and Cam Merrigan — tied for second place with a 132 at 8-under.
KMP Shootout
Jason Yuryan and John Wilkes shot a 67 to win low gross during the KMP Shootout at the Country Club of Greenfield on Saturday.
Yuryan and Mike Johnson came in second with a 68.
John Stacy teamed up with three different people — Dave McDonald, Dan Gavin and Dan Majewski to tie for low net with a 62.
FC Frontier earns weekend split
Matthew Sicard scored three times Sunday to lead FC Frontier Eagles to a 7-1 win over West Springfield in a Under-11 Pioneer Valley Junior Soccer League game.
Dante Ruggiano, Ngwang Deter, Cam Zononi and Quinn McNutt each added one goal in the win, while Trey Fraser and Devin Niles had one assist apiece. David Gray made five saves, and Ruggiano made three to earn the win.
• On Saturday, Ruggiano and McNutt each scored but Easthampton doubled up Frontier, 4-2.
Sicard and Deter split time in net and combined to make seven saves.
Hastings helps RBC Elite
Brad Hastings averaged 13 points per game over the weekend to help RBC Elite to a 2-1 record during the Spring Fling in Troy, N.Y.
Hastings led RBC Elite with 16 points in a 78-42 win over the Troy Cougars, and also led the team with 15 points in a 65-32 win over Binghamton Tigers.
Hastings also found out over the weekend that he is being honored at the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Association as a selection on both the All-Academic West Team and the Boys West All-Senior Team.
