Mohawk Trail Regional High School used its dominance on the track to pull away from Pioneer Valley Regional School, 100-45, in an Intercounty League girls’ track & field meet Tuesday in Buckland.
The meet was close after the field events, and Mohawk coach Joe Chadwick said Pioneer may have actually been slightly ahead. But the Warriors stormed through the track events, winning every event and pulling away from the Panthers. Still, the Mohawk Hall of Fame coach said that if you had been watching every event, you would have thought the final score was a bit closer.
“If you were not watching the score, and just looking at the meet, there were a lot of close races and you would have thought the score was going to be a little closer,” he said. “Every event was contested right down to the last few steps.”
Mohawk also defeated Pope Francis High School, earned a 102-42 victory to improve to 3-0 on the season. Mohawk is now off until it hosts Mahar Regional School on April 26 in a meet that could decide the eventual IL champion.
Sally Slowinski paced the Warriors as she won three individual events and was also part of the victorious 4×400-meter relay team. Slowinski won the triple jump at 31 feet, 9½ inches, and also captured the shot put (26-½). She won the 400 meter low hurdles in 81.1 seconds and joined Jackie Wells, Juliette Shean and Lilly Wells in winning the 4×400 (4:47).
Kayla Kurland-Davis swept the sprint events, winning the 100 meters (13.7) and 200 meters (28.7). Meghan Davis swept the distance events, capturing the mile (5:49.9) and 2-mile (11:57). Lilly Wells won the 400 (64.4), Maddie Boucias took the 800 (2:36), and Lily Shearer captured the 100 high hurdles (18.6). Kayla Baus, Kelsey Scranton, Abbie Boswell and Erin Laffond teamed up to win the 4×100 relay (57.6).
Mohawk’s two other wins in the field came from Shean, who won the javelin (77-5), and Violet Rawlings won the discus (82-1).
Danielle Devine had a nice day for Pioneer, winning two events. The senior cleared 5-2 to take the high jump, and leapt 15-1½ to capture the long jump. Victoria Laskoski also showed that she should be in the conversation for top girls’ pole vaulters in the area as she cruised to victory with a winning height of 9-6.
Frontier 5, St. Mary 0 — Frontier Regional School still has not lost a point all season as it swept all five matches for the second day in a row, besting St. Mary Parish School, 5-0, in an independent girls’ tennis match Tuesday in Westfield.
Celia Speth defeated Jessica Demers at first singles, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4), which included her rallying from a 5-4 deficit in the second set.
Alli Zera added a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jessica Crosby at second singles in the only other close match.
The other three matches saw the Red Hawks (2-0) lose a total of just two games. Ashley Barrington beat Ashley Forest, 6-1, 6-0, at third singles to complete the singles’ sweep. Ericka Poissant and Tori Bowen knocked off Alexas Shed and Fiona Chen, 6-1, 6-0 at first doubles, while Anna Zera and Tori Speth beat Madison Hamelin and Zhenia Chang, 6-0, 6-0 at second doubles.

Mohawk 3, Chicopee Comp 2 — Mohawk swept the three singles matches on Tuesday and opened the 2016 girls’ tennis campaign with a 3-2 win over Chicopee Comprehensive High School in a Tri-County North Division match in blustery Buckland.
Nelly O’Connell defeated Allison Ulafewich, 6-3, 6-4 at first singles, and Lilly Seaver had the easiest win for the hosts with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at second singles. Mary Monohon earned the critical point at third singles where she outlasted Brianna O’Connell, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7).
Chicopee Comp swept the doubles matches. Kyleigh Morin and Anna Korman beat Mohawk’s Rosalie Kinsey and Emilia Seaver, 7-5, 6-3 at first doubles, and Jenna Robillard and Arriana Hasiok topped Kylee Cole and Charlotte Holdesied, 6-0, 6-2 at second doubles.
Turners Falls 5, St. Mary 0 — Turners Falls High School finally got its boys’ tennis season underway and it was a very successful start as the Indians defeated St. Mary, 5-0, in a Tri-County League match Tuesday in Turners Falls.
Even though the Indians swept, it didn’t come easy. Their easiest victory of the day came at second doubles where Will Turn and Josh Gaulin beat Joe Wilcox and Remie Guerremont, 6-1, 6-1. Jimmy Vaughn also cruised at first singles, 6-3, 6-0, over Will Armstrong.
Things were a bit more difficult in the other matches. Avery Palmer earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory at second singles over Zach Mastaerz, and Ricky Craver completed the singles’ sweep with his 6-3, 6-3 win over Patrick Boyle at third singles.
The fifth point of the day was a three-setter at first doubles where Nick Morin and Jovanni Ruggiano beat Matt Bruno and Garrett Almeida, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Monson 13, Athol 3 — Hannah Colling and Amanda Hulbert each belted home runs on Tuesday afternoon and Monson High School topped Athol High School, 13-3, in an independent softball game in Monson.
Colling’s blast led off the game and sailed over the fence in left, jump-starting a Mustangs’ offense that racked up 15 hits. She went on to finish the game with three hits and four RBIs.
Hulbert (three hits, two RBIs) also hit her homer to left, crushing a solo shot over the fence in the fifth inning.
Carly Zielinski led the Monson offense with four hits and drove in four runs on the afternoon, finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle. She also struck out seven and walked two in seven innings to post the pitching win.
Athol scored single runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings. Abby Leadbetter, Shelby Roussel and Jessica Soucie each had one hit and one RBI for the Red Raiders (0-2), while Kayla Robideau and Hannah Arsenault each had two hits, including Robideau’s double.
Soucie suffered the loss, striking out seven and walking seven.
Central 3, Athol 0 — Athol had been cruising along in the early-going this season but on Tuesday the Red Raiders were stopped by Central High School in straight sets, 25-18, 25-16, 25-22, in PVIAC East Division boys’ volleyball play at Mallet Gymnasium in Athol.
“Central was the first tough competition we have seen and I’m not sure if it caught us of guard or what happened, but we didn’t show up to play,” Athol coach Donna Lajoie said. “Hopefully this was a wake-up call and thankfully it’s early in the season where we can learn from it.”
Tyler Lajoie finished with 10 kills, 9 assists, 1 block and 1 ace for the Red Raiders (3-1), while Carter Amadon had 9 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces. Josh Herk collected 4 kills and 1 block, and Nelson Leadbetter totaled 15 digs.
