GREENFIELD — The Planet gas station on the Mohawk Trail may soon get a drive-through doughnut shop.

The owner of the gas station has submitted plans to the town to turn the existing service station into a convenience store with gas pumps and a drive-through lane for doughnut sales, according to Department of Planning and Development Director Eric Twarog.

Because the gas station was built before the town’s current zoning bylaws were created, the owner needs to get a special permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals to do the renovations. From there, Twarog said the owner will have two years to act on the permit or request an extension.

He said he didn’t know what kind of doughnut shop may go in, but there is already a Dunkin’ Donuts nearby on the corner of Main and River streets, which does not have a drive-through, as well as one on Federal Street and another at the Sandri gas station on Federal Street, which is expected to open early next week.

Twarog said Planet will not have to expand the existing building to complete the renovations, and the gas pumps and overhead canopy will stay the same.

The proposal will go before the ZBA April 14 and the Planning Board will vote on whether to give the plan a positive or negative recommendation during its April 7 meeting.

Twarog said the plan has already gone through the Conservation Commission.

The owner of the Planet gas station could not be reached for comment by press time.
