A female red-bellied woodpecker has frozen into what I call “statue mode” because of the presence of a Cooper’s hawk at the edge of my yard. She remained motionless for five minutes until the hawk left.

This male red-bellied woodpecker is perched in just the way that allows us to see a hint of the red belly for which he is named. A female would look the same, but she would have a gray forehead and a patch of red on the back of her head.
