UMass basketball: Minutewomen secure 10th win, edge VCU 54-49

A double-double from Stefanie Kulesza helped the UMass women’s basketball team get past VCU, 54-49, Saturday afternoon in Virginia.
The senior guard scored 12 points and posted 11 rebounds to guide the Minutewomen to their 10th win of the season and first since downing La Salle on Jan. 15.
The Atlantic-10 affair was back and forth the whole way as the game featured 16 lead changes with five instances of a tie score as well.
Free throws were key for UMass as it hit 92.3 percent of shots (12-for-13) from the foul line. The Rams made 62.5 percent (5-for-8) from the charity stripe.
Junior Megan Olbrys led the Minutewomen in scoring with 13 points and nearly earned a double-double herself with nine rebounds. Senior Allie Palmieri paced UMass from 3-point land, hitting half of her long balls (4-for-8), to also finish with 12 points.
Valentina Ojeda obtained 17 points to lead VCU in its defeat.
The Minutewomen leapfrogged the Rams in the A-10 standings following Saturday’s win. UMass moves to eighth place with a 5-4 conference record.
Next up for the Minutewomen is a home matchup with George Washington on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
