SHELBURNE — A Shelburne man was transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center Tuesday afternoon after he was rescued from an embankment off of Route 2.
Tuesday’s rescue stemmed from a motor vehicle accident reported on Monday at 8:30 p.m., according to Police Chief Greg Bardwell. The occupants of the vehicle — a man from Shelburne and a woman from Greenfield — reportedly crashed into a guardrail near the intersection of Route 2 and Old Greenfield Road.
“The woman remained on scene; the man took off on foot,” Bardwell said. “We searched for him last night with a K-9 and a drone that we utilized from Greenfield Fire.”
Bardwell said police were concerned for the man’s safety as he had left the scene of an accident where injuries and property damage occurred.
“We didn’t know if he was hurt,” Bardwell said.
Massachusetts State Police Air Wing 5 also searched the area on Tuesday, but ultimately the man was located by a woman walking nearby who heard the injured man moaning for help.
“He was found 50 yards from where the accident occurred, over an embankment,” Bardwell said.
First responders returned to the intersection around 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday. He was extricated using a bucket and ropes, Bardwell said. Extrication took about 30 minutes.
Bardwell said the man was transported by AMR ambulance to Baystate Franklin in Greenfield. He was alert, but had sustained a head laceration and was complaining of rib pain.
Members of the Greenfield and Shelburne fire department also responded to assist with extrication.
As of Tuesday afternoon, no charges had been filed and the cause of Monday’s crash is still under investigation.
