GREENFIELD — Men will be coming out of their comfort zones to raise money for young adults battling cancer this weekend.
Sy’s Sizzlin’ Beauty Pageant is coming back for a sixth year to the Elks Lodge at 2 Church St. on Saturday, to raise money for young adults with cancer. The light-hearted event features men in women’s clothing, participating in a pageant that includes swimsuit and talent categories.
Pageant organizer Loraine Kerz said the event symbolizes how cancer patients between the ages of 18 and 39 struggle with being out of their comfort zones while battling the disease and, in spite of that, keeping a sense of humor at times.
“True to form, these guys are definitely out of their comfort zone and keep their sense of humor and keep the audience laughing,” Kerz said.
Money from the event goes toward Sy’s Fund, which helps young adults with cancer pursue passions and hobbies while they cope with their diagnosis.
The event started in honor of Kerz’s son Silas “Sy” Bennett, a Keene, N.H., resident who died of cancer at 29 years old in 2008.
“Silas had a tremendous sense of generosity, as well as a sense of humor, and he kept that going right up to the end,” she said. “So I started Sy’s Fund as a way to keep his generous spirit moving in the world.”
The event starts at 8 p.m., though doors open at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the event are $17 online, which can be found by searching “Sy’s Fund” on brownpapertickets.com, or are $20 at the door.
