GREENFIELD — Kathryn Scott is in line to become the next City Clerk.
The City Council voted Wednesday in favor of Scott to fill the role of current City Clerk Deborah Tuttle when she retires in July. Scott was one of two finalists. The other finalist, Margaret Nartowicz, withdrew before the council voted.
The council approved Scott for a three-year term that will begin July 2. Scott will now negotiate a contract with Mayor William Martin’s office, according to Director of Administration Mark Smith.
Tuttle’s is one of at least two administrative retirements the city will face in July, with Assessor Audrey Murphy also expected to retire that month. The council voted Wednesday to remove money from the assessor and city clerk line items in anticipation of the retirements, intending to use the money to help fund the schools.
The finalists came from a list of about 20 candidates, City Council Vice President Penny Ricketts said during Wednesday’s council meeting. Five candidates were interviewed by Ricketts, Council President Karen “Rudy” Renaud and Secretary Wanda Pyfrom.
Scott and Nartowicz were interviewed again by the three councilors last week. According to Ricketts, Nartowicz removed herself from the running earlier in the week for undisclosed reasons.
Scott is an administrative assistant for the council under Tuttle and a part-time administrative assistant for Northfield police. Previously, Tuttle said, Scott worked for the city for more than 20 years.
Nartowicz, of Deerfield, is the town administrator for Rutland. She previously worked for the town of Amherst for 15 years until 2003, including five years as town clerk. She was Sunderland town administrator from 2005 until 2015, when she took the position in Rutland.
The position’s salary range is $61,419 to $71,475. Duties include records and license management, overseeing elections and providing legislative and clerical assistance to boards and commissions in the city, including the council.
