WHATELY — Authorities say serious injuries were reported in a rollover crash that resulted in a vehicle fire on Interstate 91 and caused the northbound highway to close on Thursday.

According to State Police Trooper Brandon Doherty, troopers responded to the crash at 3:20 p.m. near the 32.6 mile-marker on Interstate 91 northbound. The crash led to the vehicle catching fire, and Whately and South Deerfield firefighters were called to the scene, along with South County EMS. According to Doherty, serious injuries were reported.

Interstate 91 northbound will be closed at the 32.3 mile-marker for several hours, according to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, which released a traffic advisory shortly after 4 p.m. Traffic is being detoured to Routes 5 and 10 at Exit 30, and returns to Interstate 91 through Interchange 36.

MassDOT and Whately Fire Chief J.P. Kennedy advise drivers to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.
