Aug. 19: South County Senior Center holding Informational Fair and Cruise Night
SUNDERLAND — The South County Senior Center’s Informational Fair and Cruise Night returns on Wednesday, Aug. 19, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. at Sunderland Elementary School.
The event is free. Attendees can check out vintage vehicles, purchase meals from food trucks, listen to music from local band Chick ‘n’ Wire and learn about local resources. The rain date for the event is the following day, Aug. 20.

Tilton Library holding book drive
SOUTH DEERFIELD — Those who are interested can drop off gently used or new fiction and nonfiction books at Tilton Library on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon or Thursday, Sept. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. for the ongoing book sale.
According to a Facebook post from the library, the books must be in good condition. The Friends of Tilton Library will review and pick the donations for the book sale.
“If you wouldn’t buy it, we can’t sell it,” the announcement reads.
Whately to test ballot tabulator
WHATELY — Ahead of the Sept. 1 state primary, Whately will carry out a required test of the new ImageCast ballot tabulator on Friday, Aug. 28, at 3 p.m. in the Town Offices.
According to a notice from the town, the test aims to verify the accuracy of the tabulator before the primary. All residents are welcome to participate in the test.
Engage: Deerfield to host ‘Franklin Tech: To Build or Not to Build?’
SOUTH DEERFIELD — Citizens group Engage: Deerfield will host a community conversation titled “Franklin Tech: To Build or Not to Build?” on Sunday, Aug. 30, at Deerfield Town Hall, 8 Conway St., from 3 to 5 p.m. Doors open at 2:45 p.m.
Engage: Deerfield President Pat Ryan described the afternoon as a “non-partisan” event. A panel of town officials and Franklin County Technical School representatives will answer questions about the proposed $236.6 million new building, and provide information about the financial impact and voting process ahead of the district-wide vote on Oct. 6.
Admission is free, with donations appreciated.
New assistant treasurer/tax collector to start in Conway
CONWAY — The Selectboard appointed former Conway resident Cassandra “Cassie” Maxwell to serve as the assistant treasurer/tax collector at the Aug. 10 meeting.
Maxwell, 33, told the Selectboard that she is a single mother who spent most of her career teaching. At Southern New Hampshire University, she majored in accounting and minored in finance.
“My passion is to work with numbers,” Maxwell said. “I want to grow.”
Maxwell will commute from her home in Gardner, but she plans to move back to western Massachusetts, where she lived previously. Starting Monday, Aug. 31, she will work 24 hours over three days per week at a rate of $25.75 per hour.
“She’s very determined about the job,” added Treasurer/Collector Sean MacDonald.
