ORANGE — Grab your paddles, the Millers River Challenge is coming up.
The annual kayak, canoe and standup paddleboard race event benefitting the Orange Fireman’s Relief Association, Northfield Dive Team, Orange Police Association and Orange Lions Club is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Billy Goat Boats at 25 East River St. on Saturday, Sept. 27.
“We’re going to raise some money, no matter what,” said Jerry Whaland, who co-owns the business with his wife, Samantha. “We know we’re going to have an amazing time.”
The event was first held 16 years ago but, due to the pandemic, this will be the 12th time the event has taken place. The event draws competitors from across the region. An average of 50 to 75 racers participate, and the event typically raises about $1,500.
Same-day sign-ups begin at 9 a.m. The pro race of approximately 8 miles starts at 11 a.m. The High School Cup and youth races begin at 1 p.m.
Paddlers younger than 18 can enter for a $5 fee, as long as they have a parent or guardian’s permission. Anyone 18 and older participates for $20, with any additional race costing $10. The first 50 registered racers receive a free T-shirt on race day.

The Millers River Challenge started when Communities Collaborative Inc. was looking for a way to raise money and boost morale. Tragedy had struck the Millers River in the summer of 2009, when an 11-year-old girl from Orange drowned when she was swept away after falling into the water while playing with other children. Whaland said the event was a way to raise money for a good cause “and try to encourage water safety.”
Food will be provided by the Orange Lions Club.
