Zack Bartak picked up one final award to close out his collegiate football career.
The former Greenfield High School quarterback-turned-wide receiver for St. Anselm College was named the team’s Most Valuable Player during the end-of-season football banquet at the school.
Bartak finished the season with 79 receptions for 766 yards and four touchdowns during his senior season with the team. He was named the Offensive Skills Player of the Year last season.
Owls edge Bridgewater
Jill Valley poured in 18 points and Westfield State University edged Bridgewater State University, 74-69, Saturday in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball game.
The Owls improved to 11-6 on the season, including 5-0 in the MASCAC.
Pioneer 7/8 wins
Jarred Hubbard drained four 3-pointers and finished with 17 points to lead Pioneer to a 66-37 win over Easthampton in a grades 7 and 8 Suburban League boys’ basketball game Saturday at Messer Gymnasium in Northfield.
Troy Emond matched Hubbard with 17 points in the win. Quinn Grover finished with 11 points, and Josh Glazier added 9 points.
Frontier 5/6 wins pair
Brady Burch registered 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals to help Frontier to a 42-26 victory over Southampton B in a grades 5 and 6 Subbrban League boys’ basketball game Saturday at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
Dan Fellows collected 8 points and 7 boards in the win, and Erich Brown chipped in 6 points and 5 rebounds. Ty Sadoski had 6 points and 4 boards, Coleman Hartner added 4 points, and Gray finished with 4 points and 7 steals.
• On Saturday, Sadoski finished with 19 points, 5 steals and 4 assists and Frontier defeated Gateway, 53-35, in Huntington.
Fellows finished with 8 points and 6 rebounds for Frontier, and Burch chipped in with 7 points. Sasha Dragicevich added 6 points, Aiden Dredge and Gray each scored 4 points, and Liam Skribiski-Banack added 3 points and 5 rebounds.
FCHA Mites tie
Luca Siano scored five times Saturday and FCHA played Westfield to a 9-9 tie in a GSL Mite Division hockey game at Fitzpatrick Rink in Holyoke.
Jack Laurie had two goals for FCHA, and Chase Zraunig and Jahleel Perry each had one. Hayden Ardrey tallied an assist, and Stefan Flaska made 20 saves.
Basketball
Sidney Wilson Jr. scored on a layup and was fouled with 15 seconds left to put Brewster Academy up by five points and the top-seeded team in the country went on to a 77-72 win over Northfield Mount Hermon School in a boys’ prep basketball game Sunday in Gill.
• Elsewhere, Deerfield fell to 3-11 on the season with a 66-57 loss to Phillips Andover Academy Saturday in Andover.
• In girls’ action, Deerfield improved to 6-5 on the season with a 54-39 win over Andover.
Hockey
The Deerfield girls’ hockey team continued its recent hot streak by going 2-0-1 over the past few days.
Deerfield has lost just once in its previous eight games, going 5-1-2 in that span after it started the season 0-4-1, putting Deerfield’s record at 5-5-3 on the season. Deerfield defeated Choate Rosemary Hall, 8-2, last week, tied New Hampton School, 2-2, on Friday, and then picked up a 4-2 win at home on Saturday against Taft School.
• In boys’ action, Deerfield fell to 8-6-1 on the season following a 5-1 loss to Choate on Saturday.
Wrestling
Deerfield defeated both Tilton Academy and St. Paul’s School in prep wrestling action Saturday.
Deerfield beat Tilton, 72-12, and St. Paul’s, 43-28. The Big Green is now 8-3 on the year.
Swimming
The Deerfield boys’ and girls’ swimming and diving teams split with Choate on Saturday.
The girls picked up a 97-87 victory, while the boys suffered a 97-87 defeat.
Squash
The Deerfield girls’ squash team remained unbeaten on the season and moved its record to 5-0 with a 7-0 victory over Westminster School Saturday in Deerfield.
