McKenzie Patterson broke a 2-2 tie with a second half goal to help Frontier Regional School edge Northampton High School 4-2 in an independent field hockey game Friday afternoon in Northampton.
With the win, the two-time defending Western Mass. champion Red Hawks (9-1-0) clinched a post season berth.
“It was a very exciting game for us today to qualify for the tournament,” said Frontier coach Missy Mahar. “We played well today and we were able to play a solid second half after the Blue Devils came back to tie the game.”
Frontier got off to a fast start as Ashley Borkowski spotted the Red Hawks a 2-0 lead with two first half goals off of corners.

Patterson then broke the tie as the Red Hawks fired multiple shots on net before the ball found the stick of Patterson, who fired a rebound past Blue Devils goalie Danielle Parent for a 3-2 lead.
Kathryn Mason added the final goal for the Red Hawks for the 4-2 advantage. Skyla Burniske earned the win in net for the Red Hawks blocking 2 shots.
Frontier returns to action Monday at home against Westfield High School.
West Side 4, FC Tech 0 — Jenna Melvin had one goal and one assist on Friday and West Springfield High School defeated Franklin County Technical School, 4-0, in an independent field hockey game in Turners Falls.
Melvin scored eight minutes into the game for the lone goal of the first half, and the Terriers scored three times in the second half to put the game away. Haley Dover made it 2-0 three minutes into the second half on an assist from Madison Dover, and Aby Ogoke scored an unassisted goal 10 minutes into the second half to push the West Side lead to 3-0. Jessica Weissman finished the scoring with eight minutes left on an assist from Melvin.
West Side outshot the Eagles, 22-0. Franklin Tech goalie Kailynn Mason-Emond made 18 saves in the Eagles’ net.
Greenfield 7, Turners Falls 1 — Audrey Bresciano tallied three scores and an assist to help Greenfield High School clinch a postseason berth with a 7-1 win over Turners Falls High School in an independent field hockey game Friday in Turners Falls.
Raegan Hickey also scored three goals for Greenfield (9-0-1) while Olivia Joy added a goal of her own. Grace Kennedy and Lindsey McGahan each had assists in support of Samantha Smith who blocked two shots in net.
Cassidhe Wozniak scored the lone goal for the Indians (5-4-1) while Maddie Currier made 16 saves.
Turners 3, Greenfield 0 — Sienna Dillensneider registered 4 aces, 6 assists and 2 kills as Turners Falls High School rolled to a 25-15, 25-22, 25-12 victory over Greenfield High School in a PVIAC North volleyball game Friday afternoon in Turners Falls.
Emma Miner also played well for the Indians (5-4, 4-1 PV North) with 6 aces, 3 assists and 4 kills while Maddy Johnson notched 3 aces and 2 kills.
Emily Maloney led the way for the Green Wave (1-6, 1-2 PV North) with 3 kills and 2 aces while Mackenzie Morey had two kills and Caitlin Moore added 2 assists.
Mohawk 3, FC Tech 0 — Ashley Reynolds ripped 5 kills, dished out 23 assists and added 5 aces as Mohawk Trail Regional High School cruised to a 25-19, 25-20, 25-22 win over Franklin County Technical School in an independent volleyball game Friday night in Turners Falls.
Mackenzie Mayhew registered 5 kills and 11 digs for the Warriors (1-7) while Olivia Dubrule added 8 kills, 4 digs and 7 aces.
Ryleigh Barton played well for Franklin Tech (1-9) with 1 kill and 4 digs, while Emily Miner (2 aces, 5 digs, 3 blocks) and Summer Gaudreau (3 assists, 5 digs, 2 blocks) filled the stat sheet in the loss.
Westborough 3, Frontier 0 — Sophomore Gabrielle Bailey blasted 18 kills and tallied 4 blocks as Westborough High School defeated Frontier, 25-23, 25-11, 25-22 in an independent volleyball match Friday night in Westborough.
Lauren Davenport played well for Frontier with 4 kills and seven digs while teammates Hailey Orloski and Selayna Bathurst each added 3 kills. Ella Deane added 10 assists and Bri Thurber registered 8 digs.
Putnam 3, Mahar 1 — Sophie Smith recorded 4 aces and 2 digs for Mahar Regional School but it was not enough as the Senators fell to Putnam Vocational Technical Academy 25-16, 25-17, 16-25, 25-18 in an independent volleyball game Friday night in Orange.
Serenity Eastman belted 4 aces while Lauren Henne (9 digs), Maeve Powell (9 kills) and Jordyn (7 aces, 3 kills) all played well for the Senators.
Four Rivers 2, Hartsbrook 0 — Evan Leaf and Adam Lonergan each scored goals to help Four Rivers Charter School earn a 2-0 win over The Hartsbrook School in a River Valley Athletic League boys’ soccer match Friday in Hadley.
After being shutout the previous two games, Leaf opened up the scoring for the Otters in the first half and Lonergan found the back of the net in the second half to help Four Rivers improve to 5-2 on the season.
Milou Rigollaud earned the clean sheet in net for the Otters with 5 saves.
