I just finished reading Al Norman’s My Turn in the April 20th Recorder. What he seemed to describe was an arcane system of legal thievery. That the supposed liberal state of Massachusetts would allow such goings on and that the supposedly liberal city of Greenfield would take advantage of such a system is depressing.

What Mr. Norman described is a system in which if a homeowner falls behind in his property taxes after a certain amount of time the city can take title of the home, sell it, and despite how much the homeowner has built in equity can leave him or her with nothing!

It doesn’t take a professor of ethics to see how unfair and unjust this is. It’s like kicking a person who has fallen on hard times and robbing him or her! I would like to think that our mayor and/or City Council would outlaw such a practice.
