MONTAGUE — The Montague Community Wood Bank is seeking volunteers to help prepare wood to be given to people in need.

The wood bank recycles removed town trees by converting them into dry firewood to aid those needing heating assistance. The purpose is threefold: to provide access to heating assistance, to reduce town waste by recycling trees and to build community through volunteer action.

With help from volunteers, Montague holds several wood bank events each year to prepare the needed wood. This year, the wood bank will process wood on the following dates beginning at 8:30 a.m. at 10 Sandy Lane, to the left of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Regional Dog Shelter:

■Saturday, Oct. 5

■Saturday, Nov. 2

■Sunday, Nov. 17

■Saturday, Dec. 14

The wood bank was started last year by Sean Mohoney, a member of the Montague Tree Advisory Committee, and is a program through the state Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). It continues to be run by the committee, with support from the town tree warren.

Interested volunteers should contact David Detmold, chair of the Montague Tree Advisory Committee, at 413-863-9296.

Montague residents interested in receiving dry firewood for the 2019 to 2020 heating season should contact the Gill-Montague Council on Aging at coa@montague-ma.gov or 413-863-9357.
