Sofia Holden threw a perfect game on Thursday night and the Bernardston Blaze beat the Bernardston/Northfield Cougars, 7-0, in a Tri-County League softball game at Pratt Field in Bernardston.
Holden struck out 17 in six innings en route to perfection. She also slugged a grand slam in the fifth inning, although one run did not count due to a five-run rule in the frame.
Brynn Mullen had two hits and two RBIs in the win, and Katie Trenholm had two hits and an RBI. Nina Holden chipped in a single and an RBI.
Ellis Benitez struck out nine in six innings in the loss. Calla McKeon had a strong game at short, starting a double play at one point as she snared a line drive and doubled a runner off first. Kathy Fuller also played well defensively at third base, including taking away a potential hit with a line-drive catch.
• In other action, Hailey Haughey hit for the cycle to lead Erving to a 20-5 win over Vernon Thursday night in Vernon, Vt.
Kieria Meattey had three singles in the win and also pitched well in relief. Emma Gagne also chipped in two hits.
Kailua LaFlam tripled for Vernon, and Melody Gilbert homered.
GGSL
Alicia Knapp doubled, tripled and drove in two runs on Thursday, and Margarette Howland went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs as Pipione’s Sport Shop topped Conte Office Interior, 19-12, in a Greenfield Girls’ Softball League Ponytail Division game at Murphy Park in Greenfield.
Molly McIntyre went 2-for-2 with three RBIs in the win, and Eva Ferreira and Sophia Pinardi each had one hit and two RBIs. Josalyn Eastman, Shelby O’Leary and Kylee Gamache each had one hit and one RBI, and Haylee Tuttle drove in three runs.
Yaya Nouen had one hit and two RBIs for Conte, and Lydia Wood had a hit and an RBI. Shaylene France and Katherine Tully each chipped in a hit.
• In Lil’ Nipper Division action, Sofia Ruggeri, Grace Laurie and Madison Lemay each went 3-for-3 as Camelot Carpet Cleaners beat Harper’s Store, 7-0.
Maddie Ryan and Winter Sullivan each had two hits for Harper’s, while Redyn Gutierrez had one hit.
• Meanwhile, Cayleigh Aldrich and Emmalyn Nash both finished 3-for-3 as Lundgren Honda edged Gilmore & Farrell, 5-2.
Mckenzie Hardy added two hits in the win.
Lauren Helie went 4-for-4 for Gilmore & Farrell, and Lucja Yogodzinski finished 3-for-4.
GMS wins
Behind a plethora of dazzling performances around the diamond, Greenfield Middle School picked up a 9-0 win over Great Falls Middle School in softball action Thursday in Greenfield.
Rachel Dodge was 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBI for GMS, and teammate Aneesa Brewer also smacked a home run. Ava Widelo contributed a single, and Kameryn Dearborn was 2-for-2 with a double to go along with a dominant pitching performance that featured 16 strikeouts.
Brooke Thayer struck out five batters for Great Falls, which received two hits each from Jada Jurek and Cady Wozniak as well as a triple from Morgan Dobias.
Frontier Cal Ripken
Mason Thornton struck out seven in three innings of work to pick up the victory, and he added two hits and two runs scored as Yankee Candle defeated Wilcox Builders, 10-3, in a Frontier Cal Ripken Youth League baseball game Thursday at Herlihy Park in Whately.
Owen Babb tossed two innings, striking out four, and had a hit with an RBI and two runs scored in a strong outing. Dylan Camp struck out two in an inning of work, and had a hit, run and two RBI. Jonny Scagel added a hit and two runs scored, and Cam Graves notched a hit, run and two RBI.
Wilcox’s James Lavallee pitched well on the night, striking out 12 in five innings of work while adding a hit and two RBI at the dish. Harry Laflamme and Jack Storm each had a hit and a run.
Newt Guilbault
Ryan Demers smacked his first home run of the season and the pitching tandem of Daniel Widmer and Matthew Field combined for a stellar night on the mound to give Turners Falls Athletic Club a 12-2 win over the Montague Elks in a Newt Guilbault Community Baseball League contest played Wednesday night at Gamelin Field.
Demers added a triple and two RBI for TFAC, and Field struck out nine in four innings of relief work for Widmer, the starter who struck out three in two innings. Field added two hits and two RBI at the plate and Widmer had a single.
Alex Sulda tripled, doubled and singled to go with two RBI, while Andre Widmer (two singles, double), Alex Knapp (single) and Sammy Studlien (single) all had hits.
The Elks were paced by Caleb Thomas and Connor Fortin, who combined for 10 strikeouts on the mound. Fortin tossed in a single.
Smith-Porter, Bannister honored
Montague’s Dakota Smith-Porter has been named the 2018 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Pitcher of the Year.
The senior hurler who graduated from Turners Falls High School in 2014 put together quite a season. Over 88 innings pitched, she netted a 3.58 ERA with 51 strikeouts, 10 wins, nine complete games, including three shutouts with an opponent batting average of .289 and averaged 4.06 strikeouts per game. In a 3-1 win over Framingham State, she pitched a complete game, only allowing five hits with one run and four strikeouts. Offensively, Smith-Porter batted .455 with a .500 on base percentage. She led the league in doubles (11) and RBI (37).
In addition, Greenfield’s Colleen Bannister also took home some hardware from the MASCAC. The Westfield State University softball coach was tabbed as the conference Coach of the Year after guiding the Owls to a 10-5 record and the third seed in the MASCAC Tournament.
CFC Senior Two-Ball
Kevin Parsons and Bill Hadden topped the field, as their round of 72 made the pair low gross winners at Wednesday’s Senior Open Two-Ball held at Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston.
Tim Rice and Richard Simmons shot 74 and won a tiebreaker to finish in second place, ahead of third-place Tom Bergeron and Richard Barber who also posted a score of 74.
Al Dean and Pat Grogan were the low net winners at 63, followed by George Anderson and Charlie Shattuck in second place (65) and Dave Cronin and Al Griffin in third place (68).
