BUCKLAND — Fans of public radio are probably familiar with a program called “Selected Shorts,” in which authors and actors read short stories before a live audience.

On Sunday, Jan. 28, the Buckland Public Library board of trustees hosts a short-story celebration based on that award-winning radio series.

Buckland Public Library’s “Winter Shorts” will feature winter-themed readings of classic and contemporary fiction delivered by local writers and actors. It begins at 3 p.m. near the library hearth, at 30 Upper St.

Kim Mancuso, Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor and cofounder of Pilgrim Theatre, will perform a reading from the “Russian Kolyma Tales” by Shalamov.

Mohawk Trail High School student Rosalie Kinsey will share a glimpse into life on an Innu reserve in Northern Quebec as she reads from “Kuessipan” by Naomi Fontaine.

Bruce Lessels of Buckland, author of “The Classic Northeastern Whitewater Guide,” will read from the works of one of his favorite writers, Kurt Vonnegut.

Buckland writer and poet Susannah Lee, whose work will be familiar to National Public Radio listeners, will intersperse poetry from her own book between pieces. Emcee for the event will be Patricia Donohue from the Buckland Public Library board of trustees. Refreshments, wine and cheese will follow. A $5 donation is requested for the event.
