The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts will give out about $2 million in scholarships and interest-free loans to Pioneer Valley students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees during the 2018-19 academic year.

The Springfield nonprofit awards scholarships and loans annually “based on academic merit, financial need and specific criteria set by donors,” according to the organization.

There are more than 130 separate awards available, some of which are designated for students in specific geographic areas, and students of specific ethnicities or religious affiliations. Students are “considered for all awards for which they meet the criteria,” Colleen Kuklinski, the organization’s program officer for scholarships said in an email.

“Our staff uses technology that matches students with all scholarships for which they are eligible,” Kuklinski said.

One common application, due by March 31, covers all scholarships and loans. They are open to graduating high school seniors and students currently enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs. Only students living in Hampden, Hampshire, Franklin and Berkshire counties are eligible.

A list of each of the awards, including descriptions and requirements, can be found at the Community of Western Massachusetts’ website.

Last year, 800 students were granted at least one scholarship or interest-free loan from the organization. While students can win more than one scholarship, there is an $8,000 maximum for students attending a four-year college, and $4,000 for students enrolled in two-year programs, Kuklinski said.

The Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts was founded in 1991 and has financially supported over 14,000 students through their scholarship program over the past 25 years. The organization manages an annual charitable endowment currently totaling about $121 million, according to its website.

In order to apply, students should fill out an online application by visiting http://community foundation.org/scholarships/apply/. Students are also required to submit a copy of their most recent academic transcript and a copy of their 2018-19 student aid report, which can be uploaded with the application or emailed to scholar@communityfoundation.org.
