GILL — Northfield resident Cecile DeLa Cruz’s story shows hard work has its rewards.
As the lead general services assistant for Northfield Mount Hermon School’s Dining Services, DeLa Cruz spends his days running the commercial dishwasher, overseeing food deliveries and keeping the dining hall clean.
Being committed to NMH since he began working there in 1998 after immigrating from the Philippines, he also drives students to and from the airport at the beginning and end of school and during breaks, and helps as an assistant coach of the boys’ varsity basketball team.
In recognition of all DeLa Cruz has given to the school, he was presented with the W.H. Morrow Award earlier this month for being a non-alumnus who has had “a significant impact on the life and spirit of Northfield Mount Hermon,” according to an NMH press release.
“He consistently steps up when he sees a need and goes above and beyond his duties in Dining Services … because of his love for students and the community,” the release says of DeLa Cruz. “Many alumni remember a workjob assignment in Dining Services as difficult or undesirable, but Cecile’s presence makes students want to work in the dining hall. As a workjob supervisor, Cecile teaches students to do the right thing and helps them succeed.”
DeLa Cruz said winning the award — which was named in honor of former NMH faculty member Bill Morrow — was a welcomed surprise.
“To win that award has meant the world to me and my family,” he said. “I’m so happy that someone recognizes what I’ve done for the school. It’s a big deal for me.”
According to the press release, DeLa Cruz also won the NMH Student Choice Award in 2012 and 2016.
DeLa Cruz said his main goal is to see all the students succeed and reach their full potential.
“They’re like my family,” he said of the students. “That’s why I call NMH my home away from home … For me, it’s all about the kids.”
