GREENFIELD — Greenfield Commonwealth Virtual School recently announced that it has changed its name to Greater Commonwealth Virtual School, retaining the GCVS acronym it is best known by.

“Given its ongoing mission to provide rigorous personalized online learning to students across Massachusetts, becoming the Greater Commonwealth Virtual School reflects and honors the diverse backgrounds and hometowns of our students and families, from the Berkshires to Boston and communities across the state,” Jennifer Reynolds, chair of the GCVS board of trustees, explained in a press release. “We will continue to support innovative and accessible learning for our students and nurture the real-world growth, friendships and bonds that transcend screens and take root even when miles apart.”

GCVS got its start with the Greenfield School Department and is often confused as being part of that district or only serving the Greenfield area, the release states. GCVS, however, serves all of Massachusetts for online virtual learning in kindergarten through 12th grade.

The school currently has students from 273 towns in Massachusetts, the release states. GCVS offers live classes, independent classes, and partners with Greenfield Community College to offer high school students the opportunity to earn college credit while still attending high school.
