MONTAGUE — The Friends of the Franklin County Regional Dog Shelter announced this week that it has been awarded a $2,500 grant from the Petco Foundation in support of the comprehensive veterinary care of shelter dogs awaiting adoption.

The agency is a nonprofit organization that provides shelter, medical care and behavioral training for abused, abandoned and homeless dogs from 18-member Franklin County towns. Since 2012, the shelter has arranged adoption of or returned to their owners at least 700 animals.

The Petco Foundation investment will help assure all dogs that are adopted will receive all necessary health screenings, medications, spay or neuter surgeries, vaccinations and micro-chipping.

“Every year more and more towns have joined the shelter coalition and as word about our shelter has spread, each year we are asked to care for more and more dogs,” said Leslee Colucci, the shelter director. “We are delighted to find loving, permanent homes for these stray and abandoned animals and to provide comprehensive medical care for them while we arrange for their adoption.”
