At the Central/West Div. 2 track & field championships this Saturday, several local athletes will have their shot at the podium and a chance to compete at state competition.
The MIAA released performance lists this week for the meet, taking place at Gerry Gravel Track on the campus of Westfield State University.
Meghan Davis of Mohawk Trail Regional is the favorite in the two-mile event. Jen Coseno of Sutton has a qualifying time (11:21.60) about three seconds behind Davis.
Mahar’s Sienna Moore is ranked second in the pole vault (9-10); the top-seed (10-6) is Christy Teska of Maynard.
The boys’ pole vault could be a Franklin County battle, as Greenfield’s Theodor Popusoi (13-6) and Jack Vecellio (13-0) of Frontier are the top overall seeds.
Another big race to watch comes from the boys’ side in the 400-meter hurdles. Phaelon Koski (57.88) of Frontier and Mason Barrieau (58.81) of Athol are ranked first and second overall.
Another local top seed is Scott McDonough of Pioneer Valley in the long jump (21-8).
Watch out for Mahar’s Delaney Parker in sprinting events and the triple jump.
Parker is ninth in the 100-meter dash, seventh in the 200-meter dash and 10th in the triple.
In the 400-meter dash Frontier’s Marisela Ackerman is the top local seed at No. 13.
Mahar’s Carra Fitzgerald will look to make an impact in the 800-meter (17th) and the mile (6th).
Fitzgerald is about 18 seconds off the top seeds in the mile.
Greenfield’s Victoria Marin is 18th in the 100-meter hurdles while Frontier’s Jenna Martin is 14th in the 400-meter hurdles.
Marin will compete also compete in the high jump. ranked ninth (5-0). The top seed (5-4½) is Madison Ross of Mount Greylock.
Look for Marin in the long jump at No. 9.
Ivy Shattuck is the top local thrower in the discus for Frontier, ranked 14th.
In the javelin, Reilly Isler of Frontier and Kacia Kinsmith are fourth and fifth respectively.
Mahar’s Chloe Taddeo is eighth overall in the shot.
Greenfield’s Crescens Iavorschi is the third seed in the 100-meter dash.
Mahar’s Riley Drew is slated to compete in the 200 (15th) and the 400 (16th)for the Senators.
Top local seeds in the 800 include Aidan Falla of Frontier (10th) and Dennis St. Jean (14th) of Athol High School
Alex Sharp of Frontier is the top local seed in the mile at 16th.
Dennis Simmons of Mohawk is 19th in the mile for the Warriors.
Fellow teammate London Summers is sixth in the javelin for Mohawk. Summers is just behind Emanuil Rahubenco of Greenfield.
In the 100-meter hurdles, Popusoi (10th) and Barrieau (15th) are the top locals.
The Frontier relay teams are ranked fifth (4×800) and sixth (4×100).
Moore and Anna Wetherbee, both of Mahar, will compete in the girls’ pentathlon.
