The Franklin County Hockey Association Greenfield Savings Bank Squirt Green team captured the Greater Springfield League 10U South Division title over the weekend with a 5-0 victory over Ludlow at the Olympia in West Springfield.

The Bankers got off to a fast start with a pair of first-period goals as Wade Bardwell scored from Braedon Talbot and Vincent Grima scored to take a 2-0 lead. The teams skated to a scoreless second period before FCHA iced the win with three third-period tallies. Luca Siano scored twice in the third and assisted on one goal, while Chase Zraunig had a goal and an assist. Stefan Flaska also had an assist. Talbot, Jack Laurie and Flaska played well defensively in front of goalie Jay McGinnis, who notched the championship-game shutout with 11 saves.

Earlier in the tournament, Siano scored on an assist from Talbot in overtime to lead FCHA past Brattleboro, 2-1.

Zraunig scored on assists from Wade Bardwell and Siano in the second period to stake the Bankers to a 1-0 lead but Brattleboro tied the game in the third to force overtime and set up Siano’s heroics.

Talbot, Laurie and Flaska played well defensively in front of McGinnis, who turned aside 12 shots in the win.

In the opener, McGinnis stopped all 10 shots he faced to help FCHA to a 5-0 win over Westfield.

Flaska, Dominic Sarno and Bardwell each scored first-period goals for the Bankers before Zraunig and Siano closed out the scoring in the third. Siano, Talbot, Flaska, Laurie, Zraunig and Grima each had one assist in the win.

Volleyball 

Pioneer Juniors golden

A pair of Pioneer Valley Juniors girls volleyball teams captured gold over the weekend at a pair of tournaments, while another finished as silver medalists.

The 18U team captured a tournament at Elms College in Chicopee. After tying for first place in pool play, Pioneer Valley defeated a team from New Haven, Conn. (25-17) in the semifinals before beating Western Mass VB (Holyoke), 25-20, in the championship game.

The team was comprised of Norah Ayers, Olivia Calkins, Alexandra Coleman, Danielle Coleman, Catherine Jones, Lilly Kibbe, Julia Massey, Lauren Menzel, Jessica Miller and Natalie Rathbun.

The 15U team nicknamed the Scorpions was also golden on the weekend at a tournament in Canton, Conn.

The Scorpions won pool play and then beat their sister team “PV South” in the semifinals, before besting Hartford, Conn. in the finals.

Eve Dougan, Olivia Dow, Clarie Lindsey, Fiona McFarland, Claire Michaels, Renee Reed, Faith Smith, Sky Yamagiwa and Sky Zephyr all played well.

The PV 14U Crocodiles took silver at a tournament at Woodstock Academy in Woodstock, Conn.

After winning pool play, the Crocs came back from a 16-23 deficit to beat Hartford, Conn., 27-25 and advance to the finals, but fell to their sister team (PV 14’s South), 25-23, in the finals.

The Crocs featured Liza Beigel, Tea Carboni Pietras, Talia Davis, Caroline Deane, Lucia Doulette, Emerson Joyce, Ariana Miller, Olivia Noyes, Annabel Ogden, Shelby Orloski, Sophia Pope and Eloise Tuleja.

GHS baseball can drive

The Greenfield High School baseball team will hold its annual Bottle and Can Drive on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon at Green River Liquors (formerly Ruggeri’s) on Deerfield Street in Greenfield.

The Franklin County Babe Ruth Baseball League is holding registrations for the upcoming season.

Players ages 13 through 15 and those playing middle school baseball are eligible to sign up. Here’s a list of the various locations and times.
