ATHOL – A balanced attack helped the Mohawk Trail Regional High School boys basketball team beat Athol High School, 69-51, on Monday night.

Three players reached double-figures for the Warriors (6-13, 3-4 Hampshire North).

“It was a team effort,” Mohawk coach Darren Schmidt said. “All of our guys dug in and played defense.”

Shawn Davenport (13 points), Tyler Dubreuil (10 points), Owen Cross (12 points) and Jackson Hicks (14 points) led Mohawk in scoring.

The last time the two teams played the game came down to the final possession in Buckland.

“We have improved in the energy department,” Schmidt said. “More kids have bought into out system. We have started to push the ball up the court a bit.”

Davenport added 10 rebounds and five assists for Mohawk. Dubreuil led the defense with five steals for the Warriors with Hicks helping out on the glass with 12 rebounds.

Cross had another eight rebounds for the Warriors.

For Athol (2-17, 0-8) the effort was there but it did not translate into a win for the Red Raiders.

“I cannot question their effort,” Athol coach Dan Bevis said. “They chose to end the season in a positive way whether the results are there or not.”

Outside of one stretch in the first quarter Mohawk’s defense did well keeping Athol away from the basket.

Point guard Bryce King sparked a run for the Red Raiders that sent the game into the second quarter with the score 17-17.

King had seven points and six assists.

Mark Ferrari fought through some early foul trouble for Athol and finished with 17 points. Nick Bousquet added 14 points for the Red Raiders with two 3-pointers.

A 23-point second quarter sent the game into halftime with Mohawk leading 40-27 before pulling away in the third quarter.

The Mohawk reserves came into the game in the fourth quarter but a small run by Athol put some starters back into the game.

“We still have stuff to work on,” Schmidt said. “Fourth quarter. Clock management.”

Will Guyette added seven points for Mohawk.

Nathan Heath had an active game in limited minutes for Athol with six points.
