SOUTH DEERFIELD — In light of national fire prevention week, town firefighters are gearing up to fight fire before it happens — starting in the classroom.

“The third grade has been identified as a target audience for us,” said South Deerfield Fire District Firefighter Adam Sokoloski, noting that firefighters will give a presentation at the Deerfield Elementary School Tuesday.

“This year’s theme is home escape plans and outside meeting places. This fire safety training will include material for the kids to bring home to help families,” Sokolosi continued.

The Fire Department also held a Firefighter Phil fire prevention event at the elementary school last Thursday. Firefighter Phil Safety Programs teach children about fire prevention, fire safety, and respect for authority figures. The program also promotes positive character traits such as honesty and compassion.

Sokoloski said besides the school program, the fall season is also a good time for local residents to check smoke detectors, adding that the members of the fire department “are always available to help anyone in our district with smoke alarms.”

For more information or to get smoke-detector help, Sokoloski encourage residents to contact Deputy Fire Chief Dennis Patterson, who’s available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at 413-665-2313.
