MONTAGUE — One sergeant and one lieutenant from the Montague Police Department were officially sworn in to their new positions in a ceremony this week.
Lt. Christopher Bonnett and Sgt. James Deery were sworn in by Montague Town Clerk Deb Bourbeau in front of friends, family and fellow officers on Tuesday evening.
“It’s nice when we can all get together and recognize the accomplishments of our officers,” Montague Police Chief Chip Dodge said during the ceremony.
The families were also involved in the ceremony, with Bonnett’s son attaching his badge and Deery’s wife attaching his.
Bonnett is the first lieutenant the Montague Police Department has ever had, according to Dodge, who said the reason for the new position was a need for a second in command because of additional administrative duties. Dodge said the need for a second person to attend meetings, events and trainings had become necessary for the department and was supported by the town government.
Dodge said the department held a civil service promotional exam and Bonnett was the top candidate, and then selected.
