Caroline Merkle totaled 28 assists and 2 kills to help Pioneer Valley Regional School beat Mohawk Trail Regional High School, 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-9, in a Northern Division girls’ volleyball match Tuesday at Messer Gymnasiunm in Northfield.
Lizzie Fuller added 10 digs, 8 kills and 3 aces for the Panthers, who improved to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the North.
Ashley Reynolds led the Warriors (0-4, 0-1) with 14 assists, 5 aces and 2 digs. Lexxi Mazza collected 8 kills, 2 digs and 2 aces, and Jordan Rice chipped in 6 digs.
Frontier 3, Agawam 2 — Frontier Regional School grabbed the first two sets, then hung on to outlast Agawam High School, 25-17, 25-13, 23-25, 20-25, 15-7, in the Eastern Division girls’ volleyball opener for both schools Tuesday evening at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
Lauren Davenport and Ella Deane led the way for the Red Hawks (4-2, 1-0 East) — Davenport registered 19 kills and added 8 digs, while Deane racked up 31 assists, 6 aces and two digs.
Garce Randall served for a team-high 7 aces to go with 2 kills and 2 digs, Hailey Orloski added 4 kils and 3 digs, Bri Thurber had 7 digs and 2 aces and Selayna Bathurst chipped in with 3 aces and 2 kills.
The Brownies slipped to 4-1 and 0-1.
Frontier 6, Athol 1 — A four-goal second-half outburst broke open a close game and propelled Frontier to a 6-1 win over Athol High School in Pioneer North Division girls’ soccer action Tuesday afternoon at Herlihy Park in Whately.
Lilly Haley used an assist from Angela Self in the 10th minute and Katie Thompson booted home a feed from Elaine LaBarbera in the 23rd minute to stake the Red Hawks to a 2-0 halftime lead.
Haley made it 3-0 with her goal in the 51st minute from Kate Hickey before Athol got on the board with Destiny Wrigley’s tally in the 62nd minute. Julia Carey had the assist.
Julia Riordan scored unassisted in the 69th minute to move the lead back up to three. Then Thompson (from Eliza Desmarais) and Tori Speth (from Kara Felton) struck in the final two minutes to complete the scoring.
Frontier held a 19-7 edge in shots.
Desmarais made 3 first-half saves and Alexa Boyden had 2 stops in the second half for the Red Hawks. Taylor Cleveland stopped 11 shots for the Red Raiders.
Frontier (3-2-0, 1-2-0 Pioneer North) travels to Monument Mountain Regional High School on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Mohawk 7, Greenfield 0 — Sarah Gokey registered a hat trick Tuesday afternoon and Mohawk dumped Greenfield High School, 7-0, in a Franklin County League girls’ soccer game in Buckland.
Mohawk led 4-0 at halftime helped out by a pair of Gokey goals in the final 10 minutes before the break. Gokey completed her hat trick with 16 minutes left.
Jaxon Palmer got the Warriors (2-2-0) on the board 11 minutes into the game and added a goal in the second half to finish with a pair of goals, while Ashley Lacross finished with a goal and an assist. Jocelyn Crowningshield scored in the first half from Lily Shearer, and Barrett Lieberman added an assist.
Mohawk outshot Greenfield (0-4-0), 32-1, and Lilly Seaver and Grace Poplawski combined on the shutout in net. Chelsea Mass stopped 15 shots in the loss.
Renaissance 6, FC Tech 1 — Desiree Crawford scored three times Tuesday and Renaissance School defeated Franklin County Technical School, 6-1, in a Tri-County League girls’ soccer game in Turners Falls.
Alex Brandofino had a goal and an assist in the win, and Zoyie Plunkett and Shaylene Allan each added a goal.
Brooke Adams scored the lone goal for the Eagles. Tabi Hamilton stopped 21 shots in the loss.
Pioneer 8, Duggan Academy 1 — Dana McRae’s two goals and two assists led Pioneer to an 8-1 win over John J. Duggan Academy in an independent boys’ soccer match Tuesday at Treetop Park in Springfield.
Jacob Quinn, Eli Koester, Noah Keith and Michael Menard all added a goal and an assist for the Panthers (2-3-0 overall), while Ryan Underwood and Jordan Loughman also scored and Jack Loud recorded a pair of assists.
Pioneer led 2-1 at halftime.
Four Rivers 6, BART 0 — Mac Almeida notched a goal and three assists to lead Four Rivers Charter School to a 6-0 victory over Berkshire Arts and Technology in a River Valley Athletic League boys’ soccer match Tuesday in Greenfield.
Milou Rigollaud netted a pair goals for the Otters, while Evan Leaf, Baranbus Yu and Adam Lonergan all contributed one tally.
Rigollaud and Josh Gibson split the goalkeeping and each made 3 saves for the shared shutout.
Four Rivers (4-0-0) hosts the Academy at Charlemont today at 2:30 p.m.
Charlemont 5, Paulo Freire 0 — Tucker Zakon-Anderson scored twice to help the Academy at Charlemont blank Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School, 5-0, in boys’ soccer play Tuesday in Charlemont.
Henry Walker West, Winston Posner and Raymond Mossman each added a marker, while Kyle Nitzsche earned the shutout in goal. Jaromil Topolski and Tucker Boyd played well for the Aardvarks.
Frontier 12½, McCann 11½ — Colin Boudreau managed a point in the final match to help Frontier edge McCann Technical School, 12½-11½, in a Bi-County League Northern Division match Teusday at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.
Mike Corduff led the Red Hawks with a 38 and 3½ points. Bryan Baumann and Rowan Blair also took 3½ points to help Frontier (4-0, 3-0 North) extend its regular season winning streak to 19 matches in a row, dating back to the end of the 2014 season.
Brian Boudreau swept 4 points for the Hornets and Bradley Tatro and Dalton Tatro each took 3 points.
Frontier is at Greenfield High School Thursday at 3.
Turners 13½, Mohawk 10½ — Kyle Kucenski shot a 46 for medalist honors and swept 4 points to lead Turners Falls High School to a 13½-10½ BCL North golf win over Mohawk Tuesday at Edge Hill Golf Course in Ashfield.
Tyler Noyes took 3½ points and Paterick Salls and Brian Poirier each had 3 points for the Indians, who won despite having to forfeit the final two matches.
Turners improved to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the North. Mohawk dropped to 0-4 and 0-4.
Greenfield 16½, FC Tech 7½ — Ross Akey took 4 points to help Greenfield defeat Franklin County Tech, 16½-7½, in BCL North golf action Tuesday at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Gabe Larouche and Hunter Roberts each added 3½ points for the Gren Wave (2-2, 2-2), and match medalist Tyler Boissonneault (42) chipped in 3 points.
Hunter Sessions took 3 points and Travis Cutting contributed 2½ points for the Eagles (0-3, 0-2).
Granby 19, Mahar 5 — EJ Wiley and Corey Parlengas each took 4 points to power Granby High School past Mahar Regional School, 19-5, in a BCL East Division golf match Tuesday at Ellinwood Country Club in Athol.
Brandon Green led the Senators (1-3, 1-3 East) with 2 points.
