DEERFIELD — A 21-year-old Amherst man was arrested on drunken driving and other motor vehicle charges after a one-and-a-half-mile chase in Deerfield Tuesday night.

Officer Jennifer Bartak was conducting traffic enforcement on Sunderland Road when she noticed a Chevrolet Corvette race past a Toyota Prius at speeds of over 80 miles per hour in a 50 mile per hour zone, according to the department’s official Facebook page.

Bartak gave chase, but the driver of the Corvette failed to stop for a red light and turned down Sugarloaf Street extension toward Whately.

Bartak continued the pursuit until the driver pulled into the 5J Creamee off River Road.

The driver, who was not identified in the post, was placed under arrest and will be arraigned on Sept. 2 at Greenfield District Court on the charges of speeding, failure to stop for police and operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The suspect registered a breath test result well over the legal limit, the post said.

“As schools come back into session the Deerfield Police Department will be putting extra effort into traffic enforcement,” the post read.
