Living in Colrain, it’s hard not to appreciate what our farms mean to Franklin County. Agriculture has shaped our communities for generations, and we have a responsibility to ensure its future.
In 2021, I helped lead the coalition that helped establish the Massachusetts Healthy Soils Initiative. I’ve continued that work in years since, advocating for policies that help farmers care for their land while making a living.
Through this work and talking with my neighbors, I’ve come to appreciate the challenges farmers face and the importance of having someone speak up for us on Beacon Hill. Rising costs, unpredictable weather, and an economy that often puts small farms at a disadvantage are squeezing our farms. Healthy soils can help farmers weather these challenges by holding more water during droughts, soaking up heavy rainfall, and keeping farmland productive for years to come.
But good agricultural policy doesn’t happen on its own. It takes lawmakers who listen, build relationships and know how to advocate for their constituents to turn shared priorities into meaningful action.
That’s one reason I’m supporting Lora Wondolowski for state representative.
I believe Lora understands the importance of keeping our farms viable and our rural communities strong. I’m especially encouraged by her commitment to strengthening the Massachusetts Healthy Soils Initiative and putting the program to work. She also supports the FARM Bill and recognizes that programs intended to help farmers need enough funding to make a real difference.
Soil health is the foundation of productive farms, and taking care of it is an investment in the future of our communities. We need representatives who understand that protecting the gifts of the natural world and supporting our local economy must go hand in hand.
I don’t expect Lora to have all the answers. What matters to me is having someone who is willing to listen, learn, and work with people to find solutions. I believe she’ll bring that approach to Beacon Hill.
I’m proud to support Lora Wondolowski, and I hope my neighbors will join me in voting for her on Nov. 3.
