WHATELY — A youth movement powered the Frontier Regional boys soccer team to a 3-0 win over Hampshire Regional at Herlihy Park on Friday afternoon. A sophomore and two freshmen accounted for all three goals for the Redhawks (6-5-3).
Frontier seems to be playing its best soccer at the perfect time of the season. The Redhawks haven’t lost since September 30. The victory also marked the 100th career win for Frontier coach Evan Horton.
“Our confidence is sky-high compared to where it was two weeks ago,” Horton said. “It’s a different team. Formations shift and I think they realize how they have to play to compete in some of these games. You can’t just sit back. Teams are going to steamroll you if you do that.”
A three-goal burst in the first half was all the scoring Frontier would need against the Raiders. Connor Biancamano opened the scoring with the first goal of his varsity career for the Redhawks. Off a corner kick, Biancamano gobbled up a rebound and found the net. Sebastien Migeon later scored to give Frontier a 2-0 lead.
Grant Biancamano scored the third goal on a beautiful, but not intended, strike from near the right sideline of the field. Biancamano fired a cross toward the net, but the ball hooked inside the far post for the game’s third goal. The Frontier bench insisted that it was a set shot from the freshman during the ensuing celebration.
“I was trying to cross it,” Biancamano said. “It just went in. I wasn’t trying to shoot the ball. I just tried to cross it and it went in.”
The three goals came in around 10 minutes of clock time. In the latest MIAA power rankings, Frontier is 24th in Division 4. Everything around the team is positive heading into the postseason.
“The attitude on the bench is better,” Horton said. “The attitude on the field is better. They are talking more. They are just more in it. I think they believe now…but now can we stay healthy and can we build?”
