SOUTH DEERFIELD — A propensity for the big play lifted the Frontier Regional football team to a 37-0 win over Chicopee in an Intercounty South matchup on Friday night.
The big plays came on both sides of the ball for the Redhawks (4-1, 2-0 Intercounty South). The electric Ty Skroski had three total touchdowns for Frontier. Skroski scored on a 30-yard touchdown reception, a 5-yard rush and a 62-yard interception return.
“I was honestly just out there, it was flow state,” Skroski said. “I was just playing with my friends. It was like backyard football. I was having fun.”
The junior gives Frontier an added explosive element to its offense.
“Ty (Skroski) being a big play player in all phases of the game has added an element and a dimension to our team that will be very important to us the next two game,” Frontier coach Scott Dredge said. “We don’t have a deep bench, so being able to use him in those aspects is really important to us.”
The Pacers suffered a rash of injuries to an already small roster. Frontier led 37-0 at halftime in front of the home crowd. After a discussion with Chicopee coach Alex Efstratios, the clock ran in the second half. For the second straight week, Frontier didn’t run offense in the second half.
“He (Efstratios) just wanted to let us and the refs know that he was down to his last players,” Dredge said. “I certainly wanted to honor that.”
Frontier has a showdown in Northampton next week. The Blue Devils (2-3, 1-1 Intercounty South) lost to SICS, 55-14, on Friday night.
“We have to bring energy and a dog mentality,” Skroski said. “We have to go out there and punch them in the face first and be dogs.”
The Frontier offense started quickly, scoring on its third play from scrimmage when Noah Poreda galloped 49 yards for a touchdown. In limited action, Poreda reached the century mark with 105 yards on four carries. Konnor James later found Skroski on 30-yard touchdown with 4:56 left in the first half.
“Offensively I like where we are,” Dredge said. “We are powerful and have big play potential. My concern is defensively. I know they (Northampton) have an outstanding receiver. He is a deep threat kid. So, we are going to have focus and buckle up on defense.
Frontier scored on a four-play, 61-yard drive on its second possession. The highlight was a 35-yard rush by Poreda before Skroski’s 5-yard touchdown. On Chicopee’s next possession, Skroski returned the interception for a touchdown.
Collin Healy had the most explosive play of the game for Frontier. With Chicopee driving into Frontier territory, Healy intercepted the Pacers and returned it for a 97-yard touchdown. The sophomore had the angle for most of the run but relied on his speed toward the end to take it to the end zone.
Poreda and James both had a sack for the Frontier defense. Max Hunter jumped on a fumble for the Redhawks.
