SOUTH DEERFIELD — The rampaging Frontier Regional field hockey team continued its hot streak with a 6-0 win over Westfield in a Suburban league matchup on Wednesday afternoon.
Frontier (10-0, 8-0 Suburban) started slowly but pulled away in the second half against the Bombers (4-7, 0-7 Suburban). The Redhawks now enter the stretch run of their regular-season schedule when they play teams for a second time.
“We had a discussion when the second half of the season was coming,” Frontier coach Missy Mahar said. “We talked about how each team was going to improve from the first time that we’ve seen them. Whether it’s small improvements or big improvements. It’s never the same team.”
It is not lost on the Redhawks that an undefeated record puts a target squarely on their back for the rest of the season.
“The girls are playing really well,” Mahar said. “They are undefeated. Teams are going to look to be the first team to knock them off. It is about coming prepared each game. Starting with the warmup and then executing the game plan. They have done that. They are laser focused on finishing this regular season strong.”
Brynna Fahey scored two first half goals to give the Redhawks a 2-0 lead going into the intermission. Frontier had four different players score in the victory. Midfield entries are putting the Frontier offense in excellent position to beat the defense.
“I think we’ve built a lot of communication in our practices, and we are learning to pass together and talk together,” Fahey said. “It just works great…we’ve been able to connect more which puts the ball in the goal. It helps us move up the field, with the help of our midfield.”
As the season goes on the competition ramps up, the offense has room for improvement.
“We do have good connecting passes,” Fahey said. “But sometimes they are weak. We just have to work on wanting to get the ball forward more. That will help us succeed.
Brooke Charest only had to make one save to record the shutout. Charest aggressively charged an entry and kicked it out of harm’s way. Staying sharp without game pressure isn’t a problem for Charest. Playing against her own team is a good test every day.
“During my practices I give my all and play like it’s a game,” Charest said. “Just to get me warmed up and to keep working on my skills.”
Elsa Brown fed Fahey on Frontier’s first goal. Fahey scored again in the second half on an assist from Addie Harrington. Fahey lifted a shot past the Westfield keeper. In the third quarter, Rowan Reilly found a loose ball in front of the net to score unassisted. Later in the third, Harper Modestow’s entry found Haly Doucette-Kaplan for another goal.
Harrington scored in the fourth quarter on an assist from Modestow. Harrington closed out the scoring with another tally on an assist from Fahey just before the end of the game.
Franklin Tech 6, Palmer 0 — The Eagles won their third straight after a shutout of the Panthers in Turners Falls. Emma Godfrey and Racheal Herzig both scored twice in the County league matchup. Leah Meattey (assist) and Teagan Donahue also scored for the Eagles (6-1, 6-0 County). Amelia Rider added an assist for Franklin Tech.
